timing chain tensioners
hmmm....not that I'm planning to take this job on any time soon, but I've been into plenty of other motors where you simply aligned a set of marks on each sprocket. Seems like if you put her at TDC and then marked each sprocket against a reference point you'd be able to put it back without the (no doubt expensive) Jag/LR alignment tool. Am I missing something here?

You're missing nothing, there is no short cut to doing this job. You do need the tools, but as luck would have it they are available from amazon.com,
. However, if you do get it, beef up the cam holding tool, as it's not really up to the job of holding the cam whilst you torque things up.
Also, if you do do the tensioner renewal, take the opportunity to check the valve clearances while you're there, as they may need adjusting and now's the time to do it, or you could end up having to do the whole strip again if you get VSR symptoms later.
You should also try to source this part (Shim - Cam Timing Tool Ref: 303-530-04) http://www.dingocroft.co.uk/acatalog/Tools2002-p2.html, maybe Atlantic British or other LR parts supplier on your side of the Atlantic can get you one. It takes up the slack when the cam locking tool is in place across the two cams. By the way you only need one Cam locking tool as you do one head at a time.
