Default Transmission service advise

Hello all,

I need to see what y’all say about getting the transmission serviced. Long story short i have no idea if my transmission has ever been serviced. I don’t think it has been. Read notes from the mechanic below. This is a local Land Rover mechanics advice too. I had them top off the fluid. I’m leaning towards not doing the service and leaving it as is.

Labor Service - Trans Drain & Fill. Filled transmission to correct level (transmission fluid was very low). Road tested vehicle. Transmission shift feel improved vastly. Two options to repair vehicle: Option 1: Replace leaking connector sleeve. Due to mileage of the vehicle and poor fluid condition, it is unknown how the transmission will react with new fluid. Clutch pack material soaks into the transmission fluid over time if not serviced at 70-90k mile intervals. Changing fluid may cause transmission slippage. Option 2: Replace transmission assembly to eliminate the possibility of the current transmission slipping after connector sleeve repair.

Servicing sounds a lot less expensive than a new transmission.

I think the mechanic is just covering himself because he can not say definitively that the fluid and filter change may correct all the issues.

One option may be to change the mechatronic seals and solenoids at the same time while it is opened up.

If that does not correct the issue at least you know you have done as much as possible without changing the transmission.

Good video on YouTube at Waffle Square that shows what it's all about.

This service is definitely less expensive than a new trans at around $8500. I also got a trans shop rebuild quoted at around $5k. This repair service is under $1500… but not by much. So it’s hard to make this decision. Especially because it’s not a sure deal if the trans will still slip or be gray again.

I feel if I don’t get this addressed soon I’ll have to buy a new trans regardless. Or I just take the hopeful approach and hold off on any service knowing that I’m leaking fluid. At some point in the future I’m going to have to make an expensive decision. WTF do I do?

I’ve watched that video about a year ago from Waffle Square. Great video. This is what makes me wish I had a mechanic in my area that could do this. One stop shop. I don’t have the space or time.

Mileage will affect how effective a fluid and filter change will be, i would just do it anyway.
It didnt help with my trans which started showing issues at about 170k klms so i nursed it until April this year and did a valve body rebuild, like chalk and cheese now - just hit 226k klms.
