Default USED KEYS, will they take a Re Program?

We got one key fob with the truck and saw a used one (previously programmed) for sale on CL....cheap.

The question is whether a key can be changed and programmed to a new vehicle?

Anybody know this?

Probably, I'm not sure of that actual key part is cut or not though.

Default Short answer is no.

The term reprogram can refer to two functions - the remote door lock/unlock system and the engine start/not start immobilizer system. Then there is also the metal key thingy.

You may be able to get a lock smith in your area who just may beable to get a suitable blank and then cut it such that the drivers door could be opened. Even this I doubt but just trying is an interesting experiment. You may find a locksmith who figures he can, but when he gets a suitable blank in and cut, it just will not work - that was my experience when I tried to get just a key to open the drivers door.

If you can get a key blank cut and if it will open the drivers door, it may even rotate in the steering wheel key cylinder, but the engine will not start. You will get lots of lights on the dash, but no noise from under the bonnet.

That requires programming of the single use chip within the key fob. I say programmed, not reprogrammed - it is single use.

The same story applies to the remote lock unlock / function.

In other words, for eBay and you are pretty much stuck with working thru your LR dealer who receives the new key and fob directly from the UK. That is the only place they are made. I think the endgame is for LR to beable refuse additional keys to grey market vehicles and hence regain control.

For the remote you would need the bar code and I believe those keys on an LR3 are chipped, might be wrong, but if they are you would need a new chipped key blank, have it cute to the factory key code number and and then programed.

I picked up the LR3 in Syracuse and drove it home to Alabama. On the way I stopped at the Knoxville and Birmingham LR dealers and got the same story.

Only the Factory can cut keys. Period.

After the key is cut, it goes to the dealer in order to code it to the vehicle. Period.

The brand new key that I bought on eBay seems to be a pig in a poke. People that advertise their used keys for sale seem to be trying to sell something that is completely useless.

Before I send the new key back to the retailer, does anybody have a different opinion based on what they know?
