Water Pump and Thermostat Housing 2 different bids from INDY shop
I am looking at replacing my water pump, thermostat housing, and drive belts. I took it to 2 different INDY shops and got vastly different prices. Shop A (brick and mortar that has been around for years) T Housing Part $177 Labor $300 Coolant $32 Water Pump $400.74 Labor $180 Shop B (Local guy who runs a Land Rover Shop out of his personal residence) I would buy the parts from Atlantic British or other places T housing labor $500 coolant $60 Water pump $600 What do you guys think, I may do this job myself but I am swamped at work. I want to find a good mechanic but these bids dot add up to me. |
So in a weekend on my 07 LR3, I did the water pump, alternator, all the hoses, belts, plugs, tensioner and idler. I was not working my but off and probably could have easily done it in one long day. Hardest part is popping the fan clutch loose. After that its all straight forward. I would vote order in everything you need, make sure to get a new metal gasket for the pump. Most come with a crap paper gasket. Also make sure to have a torq wrench on hand as the water pump is something like 7 ft lbs to crush the gasket properly. |
There is literally nothing hard in doing any of that on your own. Like ArmyRover said your biggest battle may be the fan clutch. You can always get the tool set for that now and see if you can pop it before digging any deeper. Its reverse thread, FYI. But all the rest is top and center. The OEM coolant t-stat assembly is about $120. Its the entire crossover tube with a new t-stat and sensors. Comes complete! Water pump is not a huge deal either.
On a side note, I would avoid shop A just on the coolant price. The correct coolant for the LR3 is not exactly cheap, $30 seems pretty low - like the green crap. And if one puts green stuff in the LR3 its game over. |

If shop B is Rovin Rovers, yes he charges a premium.
Since you have the cooling system already drained, I would suggest removing TBH and flushing the heater core. |

The thing that is the most confusing about these bids is that all the information about how much parts cost and how long it "should" take is available. I am not looking for someone to lose money on a job, just a fair price to get it fixed. |
TBH is the throttle body heater that is prone to leak. Because you live in WA and the temperature never gets to a point where this part is required, I say remove it. was I correct on Rovin Rover being option b? |
