255/55R19.....anyone run these? If so, any feedback?
I want to slap these on my wife's 2006. This rig mostly sees street duty with camping trips (so dirt roads) and forest service roads to hiking trails. It will also be a workhorse in our once-or-twice a year snow storm up here in WA state. They DO have the snowflake symbol so I'm liking that. The tread is not very aggressive but I think it's a good looking tire for my stated purpose.
I do plan on doing Black Bear Pass in this Rover if I can wrest the keys from my wife's hands. I think this tire would hold up on that trail as well, from what I've seen it's rocky but not technical.
I strongly recommend 18" wheels and tires for your trip to Colorado. You'll want to air down while wheeling there. 1) for the traction, 2) for the ride. There just isn't much sidewall on a 255/55 to let you do that.
No, Black Bear isn't super technical but it's the talus you need to be concerned about. It will cut and gouge your sidewalls and it's on EVERY trail you'll visit while you're there. Not much round river rock at 12,000'. I ran Duratracs on both my Cherokee and LR3 there. It's not unusual to find new cuts and gouges in the sidewalls afterwards. Check out a couple pics from my early October visit this year. See the rub marks on the tires in the Engineer Pass image. You really want tires with sidewall protection.
Stock suspension. No rods, etc. just fine for this area.
Black Bear Pass viewed from Imogene Pass Road just above the town of Telluride, Colorado. Look closely at the area just below the snowfield in the upper portion of the image. You can see a small white dot just below the snow. That is a vehicle on the notorious "steps". You can see another small white dot just below which is another vehicle coming out of the "steps" area. We are small in nature...
Awesome pics!! Thanks....Ugh, using my 18s complicates things. I already have Cooper Discoverers on those rims. BB Pass is the ONLY trail we are doing, the other 1700 miles are all road. On a side note, I'd love to hit you up for advice/guidance on this trip if you're cool with that. I can describe our plan and you can let me know if you see any logistical issues (besides the already noted). I can PM you.
