LR4 engine oil leak
Hi
LR 4 2015
115000 miles
ON a regular oil change the local mechanic who deals wth LR noted a small leak(oil stains on the front of the engine) from the front timing chain gasket
He recommended I take it to the dealer - they haven't checked the car yet but just based on my info they are quoting >4800
I live in southern california inland empire area - first should I fix this since it is minimal; take it back to the dealer or do you guys recommend a reliable local shop
Any help appreciated -
I previously had a LR3 that I traded in after 250000 miles - never had a problem with that one!

Check to see if any of the bolts on the timing chain cover are loose (if possible) and tighten to spec. Then I'd put a piece of paper or cardboard under the engine on your overnight parking spot to gauge how much oil is leaking out, if only a few drops per night I'd be inclined to ignore it. A $4800 hit for a small leak is not something I'd be contemplating in the real world, good luck...

Is it so serious a leak that you have to spend $4800 on it? Is there not anyone near you (especially in Southern California) on this forum that can give you another opinion? I would be extremely distressed if the $4800 was my only option. You never did mention if the "cardboard under the engine" test yielded any results... ??? Is there something else happening that we are not understanding? Please don't be pressured by a dealer for a small leak, after many years of 4x4 ownership (several brands) I've learned to basically trust your friends, and usually people on forums like this one. Good Luck, hopefully others will respond...

How difficult is it to change the Oil Level Sensor?

looking at my exs lr4 today it doesn’t look to be hard just have to drain the oil first as it’s bolted right into the bottom of the back of the pan.
so my exs lr4 is leaking oil however just looking at the initial mess it looked to me like the crank position sensor is what is leaking on hers. I’d assume the sensor has 1-2 orings that seal it. Has anyone had this issue before? It’s 2012 with 100k on it. I cleaned it all up and going to have another look in a couple days, but interested to hear if others have seen crank position sensor leak.

I am not sure what the warranty company paid, but the main dealer said it was above $10k for this, LCA and engine mounts. So I suspect your quote of 4500 is about right from a main dealer. The weakness of the LR4 is the engine (oil leaks/coolant pipes)
