Default New LR4 Buyer

Hey all.

First-time LR4 buyer. I'd appreciate any input here. I found a 2014 LR4 with 68k miles in Florida for $27,500. It spent 6 years in New York. Regularly maintained. Water pump replaced. Appears to be in great condition.

It does have some surface rust and some oxidization on the 2nd-row passenger seat. A couple of photos are included from our Facetime call.

Based on research and other forums, the price seems to be in line with other 2014s.

Any thoughts or things I should be on the lookout for? Again, really appreciate any advice here.

Looks like a LOT of rust to me. Mine was/is a Florida car and now done nearly 120K miles and not a speck of rust anywhere. Just did the rear rotors and pads and the parking brake assembly looked like new. I mention this as I've seen some northern chassis with a lot of rust damage requiring many parts replacements.

I would seek a good specialists to have this one gone over with a fine tooth comb, might cost several hundred dollars but well worth knowing what it may need now or soon.

Thanks. I had him send a few more photos that happen to look a lot better than the Facetime screenshots snapped.

The two sets of photos are very different - doesn’t even look like the same car. The one thing I find curious is the rust on the spare wheel in the first set of photos - is that a steel wheel they added for a full size spare? If so, that means the car didn’t come with a full spare (which would have been aluminum - no rust) and, therefore, likely does not have the HD package. Not sure if that matters to you, but if it does, be sure to ask about it. On 2014-2016 models, HD package gives you rear locking diff and low range gearing. If you don’t have the HD, you do not get low range and you only have a center Torsen (limited slip) diff. Still a good car, just depends on what you’re looking for.

In any event, you really can’t tell much about a car from looking at photos of the undercarriage. There are plenty of forum threads here and on landroverworld.org that provide lists of things to watch for, and I can’t think of any that you’d be able to detect from peaking underneath. You really need to go through and read up on the issues, ask the seller the relevant questions, and have a mechanic check it out. Sellers are usually willing to drive it over to a local mechanic of your choosing to take a look at it - you pay the mechanic (usually a hundred or two, if they charge at all). I did this when buying remotely and the mechanic didn’t even charge me for it - even after I explained I was out of town (so no repeat business opportunity).

You can see by the width and tread of the steel spare it's not the full size matching alloy. Pictures don't tell the full story which's why I a suggested a specialist PPI who knows what to look for. Forums can offer much great information but if you don't have experience with Land Rovers you're not going to know what to look for.

Run away. Based on my experience, the car is an electronic nightmare so you are in for trouble. I would also be concerned about the rust and you may also get electrostatic corrosion which is essentially unfixable.
