Default Timing chain service

I searched on these and am seeing costs all over the place. What is a reasonable cost at an independent to have this work done? I know the timing chain is involved but the $5-8k I am seeing posted seems like more that but should be.

tks

Default sounds right...

I just got two estimates for my 2012 HSE LUX... The indy shop was $7100 and the stealership said "a minumum of $10k and up to $14k if tappits(sp?) need replacing".

Tks for the confirmation. Makes choosing an LR4 over an LR3 a more difficult proposition

How many miles do you see a well cared for LR4 go until the timing chains need done?

I've seen quotes any where from 80K miles to 300K miles, seems to be a massive range indicating no one actually knows? If it's really 10 grand to replace, seems to make any JLR model with 80K+ miles relatively worthless and disposable.

Well, yes and no. I’ve been thinking that as inexpensive as you can get these trucks, an additional $7-8k at an Indy shop just puts it in Toyota or keep territory price wise. So may not as big of a risk considering the alternative.

IF you manage an inexpensive one and I'm not certain what you'd consider inexpensive, in the USA they seem to be priced at $30-$40K with some less than $30K. Timing chain's not the only maintenance item, don't forget the entire cooling system, bushes, seals, gaskets, fuel system, wear and tear items and much more can quickly add up to the price of a brand new one with warranty. It's not just parts cost, with labour rates at $200+ per hour and long labour book times for repairs, costs soar quite quickly.

Regardless my point simply was with such a large repair cost for a standard maintenance item with what appears to be no known change interval, do you spend 10 grand every few years for a single maintenance item (not including all of the other necessary maintenance costs) or do you wait for the engine to self destruct - seems to be about the same cost either way -20 to 30 grand for a new engine or 20 to 30 grand for new chains over the same amount of time.

Owning and daily driving an out of warranty JLR's not for the faint of heart and best suited to those who love the marque, at any cost...

You make some good points and I get it. I’m mainly talking the 2010-2012 model years which tend to be in the $15k range.

For me, the LR3/4 just checks all the boxes that Toyota and Jeep do not. Mainly the 7 passenger option. The other thing is that 4 Runners and Jeeps are literally all over the place. I’ve never been one who wants to be just like the neighbors and if I’m honest with myself, that is part of my love for rovers. I guess I have to decide how much that is worth to me. I’ll say that I loved my 99 D2 and would still be driving it if not totaled. In spite of all it quirks.
