Description:

Hoping that someone might have a use for the storage unit that I custom built for my LR3. I’ve sold the truck, and the new buyer didn’t want it...so it’s just sitting in my garage. I’m sure it would fit in the back of an LR4 as well. I don’t want any money for it, but it will need to be picked up, as it’s quite heavy. I’m located in Pittsburgh, PA...so I doubt this will be feasible for many of you, but figured I would give it a shot.

It’s sized to fit the majority of the cargo area, save for a ‘wedge’ shaped space up against the back seat, where I used to carry a FrontRunner water tank. The entire box is constructed from cabinet grade birch plywood, with the exterior coated in bed liner, and the drawer/table/interior sanded and finished wood.

The driver’s side has a ‘double slider’ setup; the top piece is a fridge slide, and then a small prep table slides out from under it. The slides themselves are from McMaster Carr; I don’t recall the actual weight rating, but they have survived about ~70k miles so far.

The passenger side of the unit is a large, open drawer that slides on square tube and skateboard bearings...so you can put as much weight in the drawer as you’d like. I used to carry recovery equipment (gloves, shackles, 20ft of chain, and a strap), as well as spare fluids, parts, tire iron, axe, etc in this large drawer. The top ‘deck’ of this drawer is about the size of a Pelican 1600 case; I used to stack 2 of them on top of it with most of my camp kitchen and sleeping gear.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a single decent photo of the unit fitted into the back of the truck, and I don’t have the truck anymore to take one. Attached are some photos I took during the build process years ago, and I’m happy to pull it off the shelf and take any more photos or measurements that you might need. There’s also a handle on the drawer, and a locking mechanism for the fridge slide now, which aren’t pictured in the photos.

Hey! This is super awesome and I'm very interested. Will be driving out to Maryland May 14th. Would love to swing through and pick up if you can hold onto it until then? Can you send over any measurements so I can verify that it'll fit in my LR4?

Appreciate you!

Hello! Thanks, it's been pretty functional for me over the years. It's literally sitting up on a high shelf in my garage, so it's easy enough for me to hang onto it until next month. What measurements do you want/need? I can grab them and send over to you today or tomorrow depending on how ridiculous work ends up being today.

I've been doing a gradual build with a fridge but looking to add a section like the double you have there. Would you happen to have design pdf or something of the that section? Also what kind of sliders did you use. those things can get pricey? Thanks

Hey what’s up -

So I drew my ‘plans’ for this on some graph paper with a pencil, and I have no clue where they are. I might have a picture of them somewhere...will have to check.

For the fridge side sliders, I used heavy duty drawer sliders from McMaster Carr (I think). They were somewhat expensive, but nothing ‘special’...just the biggest ones they sold. For the drawer side, which required much heavier sliders, I opted to rig something up instead of pay for the really expensive sliders. I used 1”square steel tube, which I mounted to the sides of the drawer to form ‘rails’. Then I mounted skateboard bearings using thru bolts to the inside of the box in such a way that the steel tube passed between them like rollers, but had no vertical slop. This created a very strong roller system, but it had no stops...so you just needed to take care when pulling the drawer out (especially if you are parked on a hill).

Hope that helps. Happy to answer any other questions.

Hi YSF,

No, it has not. Both of the folks who were interested are no longer able to get here to pick it up. Still sitting in my garage...

Thanks!

Sent you a PM the other day. If you're still interested, let's figure something out.
