The bad and the ugly...

In this thread, I'd like to assemble a series of pictures showing the bad and ugly stuff that happens with insufficient quality control or use of subpar materials. We all know that the Discovery has some software issues, but there are also plenty of mechanic and cosmetic defects:

To start:
1) yesterday while handwashing the LR5, the "E" came off... Apparently, the dealer has seen this one happening before

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...dedcf7fc51.jpg

2) The plastic trim that covers the D-pillar (highlighted below) cracked on the passenger side and came partially loose on the driver side... Both pieces have been replaced. This was the very first time the dealer has seen this happening
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...7b66650cd8.jpg

3) The 2nd row's 2-seat section (i.e. behind the driver) has a problem with the back-and-forth-sliding. When you pull the lever, the seats don’t slide smoothly but completely jam. One has to yank the seat cushions outwards (towards the door) and wiggle the assembly to adjust the position – and even then, the row only moves after a few trials.

3) The headrests should be foldable via the touchscreen. However, this only works in some rare circumstances and I haven’t really figured out how to get it to work consistently.

I use this feature quite a bit without any issues at all. As long as nobody is sitting in the 2nd row, they drop 100% of the time. If anybody is in any seat in the second row, nothing happens ...which is unfortunate because it would be funny to be able to bonk my kids on their heads while driving.

abran 10-01-2018 08:22 PM

Also, isn't there supposed to be a GOOD in there...

Thanks - In ours, it works maybe 25% of the time and I attribute this to a software issue => I removed it from my original post.....

ABSOLUTELY: There's a loooooooot of GOOD , as I would expect from a car that cost over at least >$70K. The good would disserve a separate post. However, some issues of initial quality are just baffling me: we have been now 4 times to the dealership within the first 8 months of ownership to get issues fixed....

Here are another 3:
1) The hood was misaligned: gap between fender and hood was a good quarter inch wider on the left than on the right. No pictures, but report from repair:
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...f6327c2efe.jpg

2) The rear bumper fascia was popping out to the point that the unpainted inner rim became visible:
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...ab790695c3.jpg

3) A week after receiving the car, we were unable to slide back and forth the passenger 2nd row seat:

abran 10-02-2018 07:40 AM

I was only making a joke about the good.

So you ordered it with the misaligned hood? Did not see that on the website.:)

Those are things that should not be in a car this level. Their quality seems to be hit or miss.

Didn't mean you should remove it, just pointing out that it should be more reliable so there is clearly something up with your unit. Definitely have it checked while under warranty. I've got a handful of software glitches that I'm documenting to go in for service all at once. I'm pretty sure it's all related as it's intermittent failure of the TPMS, FOB detection, and portions of the digital dash failing to load or crashing. Hopefully they can just upgrade the firmware, but also don't want to lose the advanced trailer assist software they loaded when they weren't supposed to.

Ok, now for some good. I found this center console tray on Amazon (http://a.co/d/48C8pQQ) and it's something that should have come in the Disco to begin with as it makes the center console much more practical. Sometimes it's the little things.

So, let's talk about the rear seat.

My Disco (MY '17) has been at the dealer for two months (as of last Friday). Two. Months. Non-stop.

This issue I took it in for was that the rear seat latch wan't working properly. The solve was to order a whole new seat frame. Which was back ordered. Which got delayed. Which got lost.

Which finally came in last Friday. But then they had to order the carpet for the back of the seat since it is epoxy-ed on.

That's the downside. The upside is that they gave me a nearly identical loaner which I have put over 3k miles on. Miles that I was able to avoid on MY vehicle.

Ah, well.

Ah, well.

I am also waiting for a seat... The 2nd row double seat.
Dealer spend 2 weeks to isolate rattling to the seat, and told me that the seat is in back order. After which, the car was put together for me to use in the mean time.
Got a F pace for the first week, then a discovery sport for the second week. Thought they only use these smaller vehicles for loaner, wish I could got a Disco.

1979rover 10-02-2018 01:05 PM

They would have given it back to me to hold on to but due to the fact that it was a latch problem, it became a safety issue. Plus one side was down and the other was up. And both were locked in place.

In fairness, the dealer has been really good about communication and compensation. They petitioned JLR to refund me one months payment and they covered the service it was in for.

I can't really complain too much.

Glad to know it worked out for you. My experience is not so good though.
When I first setup the service, I showed a video clip with the noise recorded to the SA. And then send it to his email for reference.
Within the first week, got several calls telling me that the car is being inspected. End of Day 5 got a call indicating that the car is ready to do. Morning of Day 6, showed up in dealership, no one knows where the car is and no paperwork was completed, the receptionist started complaining about doing these "extra" works and tries to find out what was going on. After about 30min, received a paperwork indicating that dealer performed the windshield leak repair, and left a note on my noise issue with "unable to duplicate the issue during test drive". I then decided to talk to another SA (my SA wasn't in that day), I can't understand why they ignore the issue while I provided video clip and questioned how do they test drive the car. She started with a story saying that they test drove cars around dealership, and then when I check on my app, the car was only drove 3 miles and it was on Day 5. I then left with a different loaner.

One day after, got a call from SA confirming that the noise issue is identified. After another week, showed up for pick up and checked paperwork, the noise issue is not resolved but parts on back order. When I was ready to go, wife found that the driver side floor mat is missing (car is only 3000 miles and 2 month old). Then I got back inside trying to find someone would be able to help. The manager at the end promised to make it up for me, in the meantime, SA checked with technician but of course no one did anything.

Next day, received an automated message from dealer indicating that the floor mat is ready, asking if I want to connect to dealership. Then I got transferred to the main line, after being transferred twice and waited 15 mins, parts guy started questioning me what do I need... I then told him my story, and apparently no one knows why would I got a call and they don't have the parts for me either.

Sorry for the long story, I have to say that this level of service is not what I was expecting at all. If anyone cares, this is with a dealer in Long Island, NY.

I like the tray - ordering tonight!

Black 18 Disco 10-09-2018 04:13 PM

Tray came in over the weekend - very slick and provides a built in look to further isolate the area underneath it for more secure items. Thanks again for the tip!

I got my tray as well. Unfortunately, it won't fit if you have the cooler option.

Which I do.

Oh well....anyone want a tray, lol

did you do something to make your rear bumper so black and glossy? Mine is just the black plastic that doesn’t look like this photo.

abran 10-09-2018 10:31 PM

I think that is the dynamic package.

gloss bumper and trim, intake rakes on front bumper, different gloss black front grill, etc.

Sure I now have a place to keep a roll of quarters, but you have cold beer when you get there ...you win.

The Good #2: There's a foam block space-filler under the jack that can be replaced with a 20' tow strap and shackles. When rolled, the strap should be about the same dimensions as the foam and be nicely hidden away.

Black 18 Disco 10-10-2018 02:32 PM

Great tip - I will check it out, but hard to beat the space under the rear hatch when not dragging around a useless third row seat. From what I've heard that would be a cool beer and far from cold.

That useless 3rd row is how I ended up with my Disco. Every once in a while I've got in-laws or a few of my kids' friends and need the space, I was tired of having to take two cars in those cases. I took six kids to a carnival last weekend and it must have looked like a clown car with all the kids coming out of the back that is seemingly too small for a 3rd row from the outside. Although 90% of the time the seats are folded and my dog laying down in the back.

I still have yet to run into any scenario where I needed to raise or lower my back seats remotely from my phone ...but I'm ready.

Black 18 Disco 10-10-2018 05:36 PM

I usually have mine full of hockey gear (hence the need for space) and knew after my last vehicle that the 3rd row was no longer a requirement. Gotta love the clown car reference though.

I'd be interested. Just ordered my wife's CPO Disco HSE and it is being shipped next week from a East Coast LR dealership.

Shouldn't happen in a 10-month-old vehicle: leaky transmission!

Take a look at this thread:

https://landroverforums.com/forum/ne...-my2017-89901/

BelGSX-R 12-17-2018 06:18 AM

As described in my initial post, our second row double seats didn't slide well back and forth - one had to yank the seats outwards to slide forward. First, I was told they operated as intended but when I asked the mechanic to show me how it's done, he was unable and agreed there was a problem => they replaced the seat rails/latch mechanism. That's how the vehicle was returned to me.... I start believing they are fed up working on our D5.....

Wow. That's incredible and entirely unacceptable. I've not followed your saga, but there's no way any dealer service department worth their salt should return a vehicle in this condition. Did you complain to the service manager? Another tactic - try complaining to your sales person. Different department, but if they sense that you may not become a repeat customer over this crap, they can help lean on service to make it right.

SoCalWiley 12-17-2018 10:40 AM

I would complain to the manager and LR. LR is relentless in sending surveys out about it's dealers and service (I always get one from LR and one from the service center separately) and my service rep is VERY committed to making sure everything is taken care of properly so I give high marks on the corp survey. When work was being done on my Disco, they opened the door into something and scratched the inside edge of the door, it was a tiny scratch and I told them I'd be fine if they threw some touch-up paint on the mark (it was a tiny scratch). The next day my service rep called me and said she didn't like the touch-up paint as you could still see where the scratch was, so she loaned me a car had the door re-painted a few days later. When I came to pick it up she had the body guy there just in case it wasn't good enough ...I would have been fine with the touch-up paint. Right now I'm waiting for a 3rd row roof handle because that got cracked when they took the headliner out to replaced the FOB sensor ...service rep ordered the replacement as soon as it was noticed it was damaged, was very apologetic for the damage even though it was a minor thing. No way they'd ever give back a truck looking like that.

canon_mutant 12-18-2018 02:54 AM

Holy Moly, that's pathetic. LRoA has to be involved at this point. Although my only experience with them was a "call my dealer" response. But that was a sales question.

SoundsoftheSuburbs 12-20-2018 12:45 AM

Is there any Land Rover that is put together properly?

Are these problems why the MF and residual are so aggressive?

canon_mutant 12-20-2018 01:47 AM

You guys are NOT making me feel remotely secure about finally ordering one of these . . .

Of course, I may never actually get it so there is that too . . .

Even that is likely to cost me two 1/4 point interest hikes [1/2] by the time it gets here.

Couldn't agree more about the 3rd row. My wife insisted on one, and a useful one at that. We'd had an X5 - which has a smaller 3rd row - and the handful of times we used it: priceless. The one in the Disco 5 is great and we wouldn't want the vehicle without it.

BelGSX-R 02-10-2019 09:39 AM

We have 3 more issues with our D5:
1) I wanted to re-fill the washer fluid and was unable to open the hood: pulling the lever doesn't' release the latches. Completely unacceptable, as this is the second time we have issues with the hood!

2) Passenger armrest popped open while my wife made herself comfortable. Now, the armrest falls down and doesn't stay in place (picture rotated 90degrees):

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...082e2d6871.jpg

3) with temperatures in the low 30s, the heater is not really blowing hot air, even when set to highest setting and re-circulating air => it's hard to get heat into the cabine....

We’ve reached temperatures near the -30 mark (centigrade) and had no issue with heat (Si6).

Haha, ironically today I got pulled into a Scout trip because they need another adult with room for 6 scouts. I had to be very clear that I can haul gear OR kids but not both. Luckily there are some other pickup trucks taking all the gear, I'm just bringing bodies. The 3rd row does come in handy and this is now the second trip I had to pack in a bunch of people. I do wish I got a roof rack though, at least for my gear.
