Discovery 5 lift kit by Johnson Rods
Our Johnson Rod 1.5 inch lift kit for the Discovery 5 has been a very popular upgrade. Since we introduced the kit in Mid 2017, it has been a favorite around the world with hundreds of satisfied customers. With the lift, the ride and feel remains excellent and our customer feedback is very positive for both on and off the road. The 1.5 inch lift will give you additional ground clearance to run trails faster in normal mode. Then when needed, switch to off road mode for added clearance. This lift will allow a larger off road tire such as a 275-55-20.
Many Land Rover dealers use our lift in their showrooms as seen below in an upgrade package. Our lift is preferred because of the quality of construction and materials that can stand up to extreme hot and cold conditions without breaking down. We use 3/16 high quality stainless steel which provides strength and durability. Our rubber attachment points are extra thick just like the original Land Rover part which insures a tight non slip connection and which makes them less susceptible to cracking and breaking down under harsh conditions. In fact, the rubber has a high resilience and tensile strength, abrasion resistance and operates effectively in temperatures between -60 degrees F to 180 degrees F. What is amazing is how much this lift and a set of AT/MT tires enhances the overall look of the vehicle. Here are a few dealer pics with 275-55-20 Goodyear Dura Tracs. Rather than going to the expense of getting new wheels, we have seen many users opting to powder coat their stock wheels black or in the case of the picture below, desert sand.

275-65-18. They had the 4 cyl. version which fit the original Compos.
Good news is that Compo is now coming out with a new 18" (ET33 version) to fit the D5. I will be listing these for sale as soon as they become available. Here is what they look like mounted: https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...b49e3364c1.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...a7929e518d.jpg New ET 33 Compo New ET 33 Compo - no lift |

Bouncy Suspension
I have a 2018 Discover 5 that I purchased (2/7/2020) used with $25k miles. After a week of owing, I installed the Johnson Rod's. Ever since, the suspension has become very VERY bouncy when in "off-road height", almost to a point of dangerous. Has anyone else experienced this? I've found threads that address this issue with older models discovery 2/3 respectively, but nothing for the Disco 5.
Also, more recently the system has told me "Suspension in extended mode". I understand this is an override feature to safeguard the belly of the car when an obstacle is under that car that prohibits the vehicle from lowering. My car is parked in my driveway and I can assure you there is nothing underneath. Any ideas? |
Johnson Rods
I have never experienced the "Extended Mode" situation you describe. It just be that the vehicle just needs to be reprogrammed. I do notice the bounce you describe, but I doesn't feel dangerous to me.

Any word on the new ET 33 Compo's for the Disco 5? I've the Si6 HSE model.

So a little update. I dropped the Vehicle at my local LR dealer last Wednesday. They tried to perform the Air Suspension calibration three times. Failed all three times. They then pulled the Johnson rods out and re-installed the stock rods. Again, tied to calibrate the air suspension twice. It failed both times. I was told they tried to reset the parameters since the system was not linking the numbers they were entering. Eventually, they got the calibration to go through. however, gave No real evidence as to Why it took this time (6th try). Anyways, Land Rover is signing off on it and saying it's good to go. However now I'm getting the vehicle back with the Stock rods. Im a little hesitant to reinstall the Johnson rod, with fears that it will trigger faults/ throw the system out of calibration.
What do ppl think? should I try to re install the Johnson rods? |
Not sure what happened with your install. In that case swapping back to the stock rods to clear the system should have worked.

I am going to buy the Johnson 1.5" lift Rods with the BF Goodrich KO2s (thank you GMFAIN for inadvertantly talking me into it!)... Is there any way to reprogram my speedometer for the new size? I know the math but really do not want to think about my speed every time I'm driving. I have searched through other threads and do not see a definitive answer. Thank you... kj
|
Hope to see the new build soon. The speed difference is not much to be concerned with.
|
Check out our website and IG page for more D5 lifts.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...293d2b9003.jpg |
Speed difference is only about 1 mph faster than indicated at 30 mph, 2 mph faster than indicated at 60 mph.
255/55/20 is 280.5 mm plus 20 inches = 11.04 inches plus 20 inches = 31.04 inch diameter. 275/55/20 is 302.5 mm plus 20 inches = 11.91 inches plus 20 inches = 31.91 inch diameter. 31.91 divided by 31.04 = 1.028 = an increase of only 2.8 percent. Varies a little by tire manufacturer. |

Spray some lubricant on each end and pop them off their mounts with a small wedge tool (I used a golf divot repair tool). Pop the new on on in it's place. Reinstall the wheel. Repeat. |
