Default Engine Systems Fault 2017 Diesel

Hi all,

61,000 miles, no recent issues. Was driving about 10 minutes no problem. Easy 55mph, no warnings, BOOM restricted performance mode.

Approximately 3-5 seconds later “engine systems fault”. I coast to the side of the road and about then the engine stalls. At no point did the dash or car turn off or lose power.

Tried restarting the car several times. Started cranked for 20 seconds per button push. Tried three times nothing. Turned the ignition off. Exited the car. Locked the door. Got back in. Car turn right on and continued to drive like completely normal another 40 miles no issues. NO CEL !! Only other thing was that it was -1 degrees F ( -27 C).

Here’s the problem, I have a 4,000 mile cross country trip to Moab, BC, cali and back to New York coming up in 10 days. Not feeling very confident right now. I’m out of CPO warranty.

Any ideas? Assuming a shop tool will find codes without a cel?

I had a different diesel truck I was trying to operate in -4 degrees F and the fuel stopped flowing. After that I started using Anit-Gel when the temps went below 10 degrees F and I stopped having that problem. That truck was equipped with a DPF but I have no idea what anti-gel would do in a Rover.

Damn, no one else had this happen?

I called the nearest Land Rover dealership and they told me to **** off, leave us a message, make an appointment, they were all booked up, whatever, ****ty company.

I acted like it was happening on the side of the road live and we needed help. They magically found their head tech and most knowledgeable tech who told me it was almost guarented to be an electrical issue and not the fuel and that I should book an appointment. Great. What an absolute **** company.

sigh and in NY there’s a 250 car wait on the new ranges….

Was driving the car again today for nearly a half hour and it went into restricted mode. This time it did not stall and die and then CEL is on.

had like 50+ codes stored, most had signal max/min or signal after event, so I can only imagine and hope that the battery needs to be replaced. Will report back after I replace

I've only had one restricted mode message on my 2018 td6. When I took it in, the intake piping was full of diesel exhaust carbon and was restricting airflow through a hole the diameter of my finger. I didn't have a GAP tool at the time, but the dealer mentioned something about a turbo boost efficiency code or something. Without knowing the actual codes it's hard to say, but something to think about.

Interesting thanks,

engine codes were similar to what you’re describing

Ok. Car engine is under heavy load, or WoT, fuel is cutting out near 4k rpm. Engine systems fault or restricted performance and or CEL.

Dropping this turd off at LR. Buying an X5. Was hoping for new 4Runner or GX460 to come out but looks like another year. These things are unfixable.

Did you get the DPF/DEF issues sorted out that you were having a few months ago? Three of those codes are the first, second, and third low DEF warning (including the two permanent/current codes) and one is a DPF inefficiency code.

To be fair, all modern diesel vehicles suffer the same reliability issues. It’s just too bad that LR owners have an entirely unique list of other reliability issues to deal with!
