Joined the forum to gather some info about the Discoveries. I'm looking to pick up a 94-2000ish Discovery, if I can sell my current BMW I'll have about $4000 to spend on one. I really wasn't looking for a Land Rover because I thought they would be really expensive and I was just looking for an affordable 4wd vehicle to take to the snow, but I'm finding them anywhere from $600 for ones that need some work up to about 9-10K for 2000-2002's in good shape. This really surprised so I'm keeping my search for 4wd vehicles to Discoveries. Is there any year to stay away from or seek out? I've never owned a vehicle I could take off road, I've had modified BMW's for the last 8 years and muscle cars before that. I've missed out on too many snowboarding trips in the winter and camping trips in the summer because I didn't have anything that would go off road.

I'm going to look at a '94 discovery on Wednesday after work, if the guy still has it by then, that needs some work for $600. The ad says it runs but runs rough. If it doesn't work out then I'll have to sell my car so I'll have more cash to work with.

Is there a thread that talks about all the acronyms you guys use?

its a 94 whats the mileage? you need to know if the head gaskets were done, if the check engine light is on what codes are on the computer, if the front drive shaft has been replaced, is there a hole in the transmission? is the transfer case leaking? what acronyms do you need help with

Looks like the ad is gone from craigslist so it probably sold today. This is another one I was thinking about, http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/1494828194.html If I get my BMW sold it would leave me about $1500 to spend on repairs. I've been working on cars for the last 15 years and other than the last 5 years its how I paid the bills. I'm a competent mechanic but have stuck to muscle cars and BMW's so I'm sure there are new things to learn with the LR.

I can't think of any specific acronyms right now but browsing a few threads today people were talking about warning lights that were on and I didn't recognize a few.

Is there any mileage to stay away from? I know from my muscle car experence that most anything with over 80-100K was pretty much done, but with the BMW's we have customers with almost 400K on the original engines with no major engine work being done to them. So I don't know if I should not bother with anything that old or if its no big deal if they have 120K+ on them.

well the head gaskets usually go around 60-90k so if its over a 100+ chances are they were done. they front drive shafts fail because the u joints are too close to the cats and they dry up bust open and the shaft can put a hole in the transmission and or take out the transfer case... so. its up to you. most peoples discoverys last them to the 180-250k point. A few rare instances i have seen people hit 300k. if you are looking to go on the cheap then that truck you're looking at looks like a good deal. i'm sure the HG were done. as for the lights. the only acronym we use is 3 amigos. which is the traction control, hill descent control and ABS lights all on. Its a common fault and can mean a number of things from a bad hub, to a wheel sensor, to the ABS modulator gone south. Josh has a good write up on how to fix that problem in the HOW TO section.

Thanks for the info. I just realized this morning getting in my car that my garage isn't the biggest and I was wondering if someone could measure their stock discovery from front to back and top to bottom for me that would be great. I just purchased a condo over the summer but we are not allowed to park on the street so it has to fit in the garage.
