Default question re: land rover freelander 2 hse TD

Hi I am new to the site and totally not mechanically minded so I have a question we had a new timing belt/water pump combo fitted to out landy, but after it was fitted it run really badly when we tried to get up to any decent speed. We first thought it was fitted a tooth out but it turns out it was a faulty cam sensor. Could the sensor have been damaged during the fitting or totally coincidental??
