How old is everyone?
25 yrs. 03 Disco 96k miles. Always had my eye on a rover since my first trip to Nigeria back in 03. I admired how they could drive through almost any terrain .During the wet season it was a workout pushing a little carolla up a muddy hill in the village lol. I've only had my disco for a few weeks and finally been able to get her on the road after sorting out a few kinks. So far it's mostly city driving but Im curious about off roading in the near future (as I continue my research :P ) I'm sure there's some places in the outer Houston area.
Well here's my shot -
I'm 54 and about to retire in 3 years...I've always wanted a 4x4 but never got around to getting one.
I drove everything in the US Army from the " jeeps" to the 5 ton trucks, and in between. Tracked vehicles up to the M88 Recovery vehicles - come to think of it I was on the team that tested the XM1 battle tank in the sand theater in New Mexico...now they are to what...V5 ??
I watched and rode in my friends '96 Disco 1 for years...and finally this month talked him out of it.
I'm still not sure if that was a good idea! Just Kiddin'. It's great having something I can work on.

Ahh, the Hercules! I got to drive that once during our licensing/cert day in Germany. I needed to be cleared on our comm Gama-goat and since I was the first one there and only like 3 people needed the goat I was done pretty quick. The officer there said "hey, you have time if nobody is waiting you can test on anything else you want" I looked over at the m88 sitting there with nobody in line and said "what about that?" and he said go for it. lol
I think I got the M113 and M577, the deuce and a half, 5 ton, the goat, and M151

Iv'e had my 99 DII since 2000. We have taken her to Mexico (copper canyon) about 10000 miles . From Ky we have taken an 8000 mi trip out west and up the coast.Grand Canyon twice A Zion canyon to hike the narrows of the Virgin River. Couple of trips to Colorado & Utah (missed Moab fling in 2010 by a couple of weeks) To Florida: Redneck Riviera and Keys many trips. Maine to hike the 100 mi wilderness and drive down-coast
209,000 Miles Looking for 300,000 Probably head out again soon not sure where yet.
I should do a couple of upgrades like I have seen here. Very nice

Great topic! It's really nice to see how many people keep these vehicles around as part of the family, or as valued personal possessions and not simply pieces of sheet metal.
I turned 28 in June, and while my '99 DII is currently out of commission (uh, as of June - awesome bday present.. gr) she should be back on the road shortly!
Considering the complexity of my Range Rover Sport and the fact that it was the first production year, I'm very happy with her as well - bought with 100k mi warranty on consignment so no worries so far!
The Disco was my first SUV ever and I have since become totally converted for life - what was once a beater became the car I bought back from my insurance company after being totaled just so I could see her come back to life once again, destined to stick around forever. 167k miles and going (soon!)

Age 30 after being rear ended and two back operations i layed around thinking what i would spend some lawsuit money on and figured i would buy the closest thing to a tank i could find and this beautiful 2001 land rover se came to mind and it had 97,000 miles and was owned by a 70 year old Chinese guy who had service records from day one. It was not for sale but i talked him into it and he gave it to me for $2500 and i am very pleased with it! Hope it runs for a long time because i am awaiting my nerve stimulator implant next month and cant really get under it to turn wrenches anymore. Bought this with the thought if someone is not paying attention and runs into me again i will hopefully not get hurt as bad as the last time. I have worked on several at the dealership so i know the common problems and fixes buf still love the look.
I'm at 51 but we bought our '01 DII SE for our daughter who is just starting to drive at 15 (learner's permit). We didn't want her driving my '05 F350 or the wife's '05 Mustang GT so we had to get another car. She wanted to have something different than everyone else and when this caught her eye in a craigslist ad, she had to have it. A little leery from all the reliability concerns but it also seems that with anything you buy, you'll find a long list of problems that people have experienced. Anyway, we're supporting her independence and "uniqueness". This is a girl that wore a camo dress to the Spring dance so this seems to fit her well. We'll see how it goes!
I'm 22, I've had the Discovery since I was 18. I've gone from total noob about cars to almost shade tree mechanic. I really enjoy the rover experience. I can't realistically say how much longer I can keep the Discovery but I'm going to try my damndest to keep her forever. The Discovery was always my dream car since I was a kid. When I was little I would pass up a ferrari for a Disco(maybe not now
). It was shocking to see prices when first shopping for a Disco. I think I really lucked out with mine. Although the head gaskets eventually had to be replaced the truck does seem to be pretty sound mechanically now. But I always drive her carefully I think that has a huge part to do with keeping these things on the road. Slow but steady acceleration, lightly feather the gas pedal, break as early as possible and give the truck plenty of space to stop.
