Rick,
Just a heads up I doubt your key will be able to be paired to any body else's LR3 as the VIN # has been seeded into the transponder chip in the fob. It's a one time operation based on my research....the "pairing" the dealer does is only a finishing touch.

Sorry, but according to Joe Bullard Land Rover/Jaguar in Mobile, AL, a fob is generic until it's programmed. That is why they need both fobs and the vehicle on hand in order to match everything.
The Blade is what you're thinking about. A genuine LR fob from the factory is able to receive any programming....once.
I guarantee the fob to be programmable by a LR dealer. You would need to buy a blade for about $35 to fit your VIN, of course.
Our LR dealers need to get their story straight - mine told me that part of the work (aside from the blade being cut) was done at LR in the UK when the key is sent out. Something to do with the immobilizer ECU seed. Otherwise I can see no reason why keys have to be ordered from the UK. The cutting of the blade can be done by any locksmith with the right equipment and I'd expect a LR dealer to have that. There would be no reason not to have a box of keys on the parts shelf without making customers wait 7-21 days.
The programming at the dealer with your existing keys is just a pairing (like bluetooth) so that any missing keys will be ignored even if valid.
If your guy is right, please let me know as there has been much folklore and myth on these damn keys...
But you're right, once the VIN # is in there, it ain't coming out. You can swap out the key portion but it won't fool the immobilizer and opening the door manually will set off the alarm.

My OEM fob is from Joe Bullard LR in Mobile. 251-478-2228. You can speak with the LR SA, Tito McKinney, with whom I confirmed my facts earlier today.
Again, I guarantee the fob so no harm.
I wanted to send a link about the tow hitch to Galdor, but your mailbox is full.
here's what they look like:

I know this is a few days old, and the key may be sold already, however for information... On lr3, and sports alike, a key is for a certain car. All available keys are programmed to each vehicle's CJB at manufacture, up to a total of 30. Programming a key to this vehicle simply sets the CJB code for that key to active. It uses the same rolling code for both remote operation and ignition. You can not use a key that was made for one car on another as the CJB will not recognize its code.
