Target generic brand shovel. It's light and strong and the overall size is just right, not too big, not too small. Haven't carried more than a small Coleman hatchet.

Yes it is, I got it for Christmas several years ago, my dad's Vietnam foxhole shovel wont fit.
I highly recommend the folding shovel, very strong and light and easy to use and can be locked into different positions for different tasks.
A carry case would be nice.
The machete is used for cutting low hanging tree branches and the like.

Two shovels

A German military entrenching tool.

And a Land Rover MoD shovel

I have a 3/4 size ax I carry.

Apparently this is a really nice shovel, available at Lowes I think.

Tom- i really like that fiberglass shovel will have to check it out. i have been looking at tri folds but my worry is some of them use a twist mechanism to let the extension out and i think a good enough shove into the ground and it just won't hold and will collapse back into itself. the problem with the full size is where to mount it. i dont have a roof rack right now but i do plan on taking out my back seat and constructing something to fill the rear seat well so i can store stuff so that might be my sweet spot to store full size tools like an axe, shovel etc.

Hilltopper you need to go to the camping and Army surplus stores and look at the folding shovels.
Mine does not have a extension, it has the round screw do hicky to lock it into place once you open it.
If its good enough for our troops its good enough for me.
My shovel and machete stay in the truck at all times.
I have used both many times with no problems, the shovel is very strong, you may need to get on your knees to dig out a tire, but so what?
