Btw, I believe small accessory wires should be fine in the engine bay. There are already lots of small wires in wiring harnesses going right over the engine and to parts connected to it, i.e. the injectors, etc., and I've never heard of them melting. You could double-check the insulation temp rating, but as long as you're not super-close to the engine, you likely have nothing to worry about.

 

I guess I'm hijacking this thread, but what does the Styrofoam have to do with the SRS? I always wondered why it was there.

 

It's a good question, the big yellow warning sign and "SRS" stamped on it is whats giving me serious pause to touch it... can't find any info on whether its safe to remove.

 

I think they labeled it SRS to warn you about the wiring in that area and steering column. All that foam is there for is to help protect your knee's from the steel in the dash/column area.

 

Ok to be clear, there are two different pieces of styrofoam. On the cover (which I see no downside to removing, other than some knee or sound protection), and then the grey foam on the steering column. This latter foam is much sturdier, and that's the piece I'm uneasy on removing.

My grey bit has been rattling around for ages. My guess is that it's sound insulation. But I don't know for sure.

Mine is loose because I've routed a few wires behind it. I'm waiting for it to become so annoying I remove it completely. But for now it's easy enough just to keep putting it back in.

I personally wouldn't have an issue putting something in its place. That is until someone comes along and says its vital for safety, or summink.

 

New fuse panel will fit nicely. I plan to cut out the styrofoam to use the existing metal mount, and shaping a piece of lexan to fit over the metal. Panel on the left. Relays, terminal block for factory dimmer splice, terminal block for switched power source. That way I only need to tap the factory electrical twice and never again

 

Making progress. Need to fiddle around about how best to route the 4 gauge cables. Not a lot of space to work with. Is one of those large bolts up and behind the main fuse panel a good ground spot?

Old thread, I know, but running into the same question: is it safe / a problem to remove that grey styrofoam? I’d prefer to mount additional fuses / relays inside the cabin rather than under the bonnet.

 

I used the battery box under the hood for my accessories relays and fues box. I don't use the stock jack so I removed it and used the large empty dry space for my new electrical location.
