Default How do I remove roof bars?

Please don't tell me I have to pull the headliner to remove the luggage rack bars on the roof! My roof is badly oxidized and I want to paint it, but I'd rather not have to paint around them. Plus, I'd eventually like to get the XD low profile full length safari rack from Rover Racks.

Ok, I will not tell you that you need to remove the headliner to get to the nuts that hold the roof rails on.

I'm sure your headliner is sagging anyways.

You should bite the bullet, pull the headliner, attend to any other issues, remove the nuts and roof bars, Temporarily plug the holes, paint the roof, then put it all back together.

Yeah, it is sagging pretty bad. Just wasn't ready to tackle that PITA yet. Anyone know if I can just glue some bulk fabric on the headliner if I pull it out? I saw a guy on here somewhere that had a camo pattern on his, that's where I started thinking about it.

It is a pretty simple removal and then you can see what condition the sunroof drain tubes are in and if it needs resealing at the corners of the frame.

There is a one-piece fiberglass backer board with the original covering glue on it. There is a layer of foam that dries out and comes apart with age allowing the cloth to sag.

You have a few options, some have repainted the fiberglass and reinstalled it as is, some have put their own material on it, you can buy replacement sunroof materil or take it to an auto upholstery shop. Persoanally I left mine out altogether.

Fortunately, I have no sunroofs. Used to have a D2, so knew about the probs. when I found my SD D1, I was happy to be without them. Can't leave the whole liner out though. I live in AZ and need some insulation; hence the thought of painting the roof white.

it would look badass with the galvanized color from kbs.

are you doing it yourself or sending it in?

gotta do the headliner right, especially if you have no sunroofs. still check alpines and drain rail and other seams/hole, ie. luggage rack rails. then you won't ever have to do it again, hopefully.
