Default End All answer to stupid oil questions.

USE THIS FILTER. PUROLATOR #L40316. 17 microns @ 50% 1st pass. Made by Mann.

Vs. A wimpy 3001...

USE THIS OIL. ROTELLA 15/40 -OR ROTELLA 5/40 SYNTHETIC (I don't recommend synthetic to my disco customers, It seems to just pour through the crusifix seals)

2003 Discovery - 30* ambient temp: - 5/30 Synthetic oil - 15 psi idle COLD, 40 psi 2500 RPM COLD - 9 psi idle HOT, 38 psi HOT 2500 RPM

Same car with mongo filter and Rotella 15/40: 38 PSI idle COLD, 66 psi 2500 COLD -
21 psi idle HOT, 62 psi 2500 HOT.

(this engine has a tired pump and worn bearings, customer was concerned with engine NVH, noisy idle was eliminated with Rotella + mongo filter.)

Awesome.
Where are you buying that oil filter?
I can get them at Advance Auto but not sure if they carry that one, I will have to check.
I do like Purolator oil filters.
I have been using those oils in my truck for about 40,000 miles and will never use anything else.
I have put just shy of 60,000 miles on her.
I used Mobil 1 before, will never go back.

Now THAT is a serious filter!!! Must barely squeeze in there. I usually get the K&N or M1 301 which is bigger than the stock. Any issues getting that in and out?
Also, is your shop in Long Branch? Been looking for a LR tech in case I run across something I don't want to do myself.

How does that compare to the Mobil One 301 filter in size?

It will fit, because it is just about 1/4 of an inch longer than a WIX 51459 (Caterpillar oil filter, among other things).

I could not find as many specs on the Purolator, but the L40316 is 3.78 inch OD, and 7.2 inch long, with a relief valve PSI of 36.

Purolator's "suggested" filter for a D1 is the L25195, shorter, but has a relief valve rating of 14-16 PSI.

The WIX 51459 is 3.7 OD, 7.01 inch long, 25 micron, and has a 7-9 psi bypass rating, 310 PSI burst rating (heck of an oil pump).

So would my twisted logic be correct - the higher relief valve rating of the Purolator L40316 - would that mean that the filter has to be way more restricted to "bypass" and stop filtering? Seems like it would outperform the WIX as well.

Also, the MANN site shows two filters that cross to the Purolater number, a W950/4 (36 psi bypass) and the W950/7 (10 psi bypass).

does anyone worry about the weight of a filter that size hanging off the front of the motor? I know on a 3.5 & 3.9 with the external oil pump, I would be have some concern.

Yeah the filter is as industrial as it gets. It weighs like 4x as much as a 3001, the sheet metal is like twice as thick. I cut one open, and they are the pinnacle of German engineering, Excellent anti drain valve, 36? (I think) PSI bypass. Fit is just right on a disco 2. I use them on my waste oil heater in the shop, 230 gallons this winter and its still filtering.

Yeah my shop is in Long Branch, Stop by next time your down,
5 Corners Auto Repair, 80 North Broadway, Long Branch

Any auto parts store can get them. With my commercial account and buying 12 at a time I pay $5.20 per filter.

I've been running the WIX of virtually the same size, no issues, plenty of clearance. I'm switching today. Like the higher bypass number. Everyone should like increasing oil capacity. And mo pressure is mo better.
