Just heard about the rumor that the 2020 Land Rover Defender will be a pickup truck, and that it is supposed to compete with the Mercedes X-Class truck. What are you guys' thoughts?

 

If it looks like this...then NO. Just my two cents.

 

There is really only one way that a new Defender could be exciting, and that is if Land Rover created it as an ultra-lux UTV, off-road-only all-trail vehicle -- something far more up-market than current 4-seat UTV's, but not a $90K pickup truck. If they did a $35K (base price) UTV, they could easily offer something with utility and function nothing else on the market could touch without it just being another Range Rover thing for the elite. Sure, it wouldn't be street-legal in some jurisdictions, but neither was the last Defender and at the end of the day, that is not JLR's problem. Customers will either find a way to put them on the street as they often do with UTV's, or they will tow them. Nothing else they could produce will be anything different than the same thing they're already making.

 

Not going to lie I would drive that.

It is likely to have a pickup option along with a 2 and 4 door suv style I would bet
