Getting back into a Defender. this time is a low like 2021, carpathian/acron/white roof with offroad pack. Can’t wait!! Only issue is that it has the base audio system. How bad is it really? Willl I regret it? Anyone upgrade with good results?

 

The standard six-speaker, 180w stereo is awful. I had a loaner with it and it was so bad, I couldn't listen to music. It is really only for listening to the news or podcasts. I have the mid-tier 11-speaker, 400w Meridian system on my 2021 110 S and it is pretty good, although not as good as Meridian systems in other JLR products. I believe it is possible to retrofit the Meridian system, but it is costly and would require CCF updates. You are probably better off going aftermarket.

 

Even the base Meridian is awful, cant imagine anything lower

 

Retrofitting the Medidian Surround system is a fool's game unless you upgrade the crappy speakers they installed at the factory.

2ohm Focal speakers aren't cheap, the better ones are over $1000 per pair - and they are hard to source, usually come from Europe.

I think the base radio/ stereo is just fine and I use it all the time. Never seen the need for bangin' bass at my age.

Road noise from AT tires, and wind noise from roof rack and snorkel are going to eliminate the highs and lows from a $20,000 stereo in a proper Defender anyway

 

Just start with sound deadening of the doors, this only alone transforms the sound of your base audio system.
Next step, more expensive, 2ohm set from Blam or Focal.
I'am happy with my base sound for now.

Isn’t it possible to enable the subwoofer with the Gap IID tool? Not sure if I read this or my mind is playing tricks on me,
