Default 22" Rims! Swap Them or go offroading in them! w/ Pics

First offroad vehicle and first land rover. Went in to get a used LR4 and walked out putting money down on a defender! I'm used to getting 22" rims on my past Yukon and got it for the defender. After learning about offroading (from the interweb) i wish i got smaller rims and bigger tires!

Thoughts from the forum..... lift 1.5" + 33" tires or just toss some offroad tires on them and go have fun? Stock tires are 275/45r22. Not sure 33" tires would fit without the lift?

New Defender!

Keep those for street duty and buy an set of 18s if they’ll fit on your model or 20” if 18s is not an option and throw some A/T or M/T and tires on them. Set of extra tpms is about $125 on amazon that is plug and play. It doesn't take long to swap a wheel set. I do it for weekend play.

As far as lift goes. If this is garage kept, make sure it will fit still before you lift it and upsize tires.

Its a P400 and I'd rather not change out the brake caliper to make a 18" fit. so its either 19" or 20".

I can't find anyone out there with 22" rims, offroad tires except for 1 on the Johnson Lift rod thread. Maybe there is a reason why!

yeah. I personally wouldn’t downgrade brakes to do 18s. I’d skip 19s due to poor tire selection. With some patience you can likely find a spare set of 20s and throw tpms and off-road tires at them.

I don't do serious offroading but end up on muddy trails, roads, sandy/beach areas a dozen times a year while hunting and fishing. Also doing some "light" offroading on trails at big bend next week. Would love to go to hidden falls too near Austin. Anyone know largest stock tire?

I am surprised I have not seen more of the stock 20" wheels for sale as folks have replaced them. I'd personally love to get a second set of the stock rims but am waiting for a deal.

I thought Lucky8 was found 18"s that fit the P400? Don't recall the brand though. You may want to check out Lucky8's Instagram posts. I'm pretty sure they're running 35"s on 18"s with Proud Rhino 2" lift, Disco 5 wheel spacers, and minor adjustments to the wheel arch liner.

You have to do some sort of modification to the rear brake caliber.

I ended up going with 285/45/F22 Nitto Ridge Grapplers. 1/3" clearance at the lowest high setting for air bags. I normally just rid at the mid level, we don't think there will be any rub issues and even so, it'll be a random incident against the plastic. I'll see how they survive (or don't) big ben here in texas, I might be asking for advice on someone to refinish rims soon!

My thoughts are for hybrid use. I travel long distances to do mild off road bird hunting and while the off-road tires are definitely better looking, I went for all season for the wet rainy weather in my area. I also ordered 19 inch because it is just too easy to trash those nice low profiles on curbs and the ride is better with more sidewall. 19 inch feels like a good compromise with good handling and ride. For more frequent off reading I will get a set of 18inch steel wheels and some off road tires.

Any updates on this, rubbing ect?
I too have the 22s...looking for a 2nd in 19 or 20 but winter is fast approaching and need to make a decision to swap tires or run the AT all winter long not sure how they will handle in snow​​​​
