Aftermarket Parts: Chinese made or OEM?
First off, I want to mention that I have leased my new 2025 Defender. Please don't flame me, but I just didn't want to own something that may have questionable reliability issues in and out of warranty. That being said, I do want to make some simple modifications during the life of the lease for either overlanding, off-roading, or just plain aesthetics.
Not surprisingly, but I'm seeing a bunch of Chinese made knock offs for Land Rover aftermarket parts. Given that I only need the parts to last me less than 3 years and that I'm not looking at items that would affect the structural integrity or functioning of my Defender, do you guys think that Chinese knock-offs could be an option? For example, a plastic OEM A-frame protection bar is $1,200 through Land Rover, but ~$350 for a knock-off. I'm usually all about OEM in my other vehicles, but given that I want to use this Defender for some off-roading, I fully expect anything on the exterior to suffer some level of chips/damage. Doesn't really seem like I need to go OEM for most situations, but wanted to get some thoughts from the forum.

The A-Frame bar is not a structural component, so putting on a knock-off unit wouldn't have any effect in that regard. The OEM version comes with replacement parking sensors and a new camera, as those have to be relocated onto the bar. Not sure if the chinese versions come with that. They either won't function correctly, or you'll have to remove and reinstall the parking sensors and camera. Also, you won't have to worry about the OEM version installed incorrectly, whereas chinese versions might not fit or line up properly.
Lots of OEM pars are made in China. Example: the OEM bull bar.
I'd go aftermarket. No uptick in quality to justify the cost of OEM. I have been thoroughly unimpressed with the poor quality of some OEM parts.

The Chinese knock-off appears to be a direct copy of the OEM. It has the holes for the sensors.
I was seeing the same type of feedback! I was looking at the OEM side collapsible ladder and was seeing people post about how they were having issues. If the OEM has high potential for issues anyway, I might as well save a good amount and just go Chinese.
Less than ideal from an OEM product. LR's response was to offer to sell me another. I'd not waste my money on OEM when the same or comparable products are a fraction of the cost. Less consistency perhaps with aftermarket but if the OEM is consistently cheap junk you've got nothing to lose.
I know most all Wheels are made in China now days, including many of the OEM wheels.
So many things come from China - is it really a knock off? I recently had a full gloss black f/r bumpers and trim fitted at a local body shop. The manager asked me where I got the parts because the fitment was really good. He was surprised when I told him eBay.
Looking at other things like lights, there are some big differences, and it’s in the details. I swapped out my tails for clears, not OEM, and while they work, you can see and feel the slightly lower quality, but only when you have the OEM for comparison. However, removing the OEM lights also revealed a ton of unnecessary foam that was clearly used as sound deadening material. Swapped in the Chinese tails and experienced zero noise.

I'm not saying all, but many parts are made in China. The same factory will make x # of parts for the OEM, and then make some more for themselves that get sold on Aliexpress, Ebay, etc. Even parts that are sold through more reputable channels get the designation OEM vs OE depending on if it has vehicle's manufacturer label on it or not. Another difference may also be that the OE parts may go through addt'l QC testing? Parts may have slight abnormalities or defects, and hence rejected by the manufacturer may also end up on Ali and Ebay. I purchased my Defender but lease most of my other vehicles and I'm with you. For many cosmetic or small electronic parts, I'd rather go the cheaper route, esp when it's going onto a car that I'm not keeping.
