We have it. Works fairly well. We've got dog beds in it for our two. It's made well, but is pretty flimsy, as in doesn't retain a shape and the dogs easily push down the sides and slip off the front. Which is why I'm now looking at getting a couple of these foam blocks.
I don't know why it says it's not for hard tops, that just makes no sense to me!

I thought of a platform like yours, however coming from a Volvo where the front seats have WHIPS I don't want something that wouldn't compress. Not that I know if the Defender has WHIPS...
Here's the one photo on my phone of ours in the back with the cover. I can get more tomorrow. However you can see how it gets moved around a bit.
