Default Rattle/tapping noise at cold start up? This may be your issue

Our 100k defender started developing a tapping/rattle at cold start. Traced it down to find this. Was hoping it was something simple. Just spreading the word as ive heard other defenders do this. It may be an issue that is starting to arise.

Broken manifold bolts. A total of 5 from what I can see. Once the engine warms up the noise goes away. I'll have to remove the complete turbo and drill the broken bolts off. Bad timing as we've got an event tomorrow with socal rover club.

I had this on my '21. At start up it kind of "whined" when the engine revs increased but disappeared after a few minutes. Dealership said it was loose bolts (but they may have sheared) so they repaired it and it's not happened since.

There's no recall, or even a bulletin on it as far as I know, plus I haven't read of anyone else with it on this forum.

Is this on the P300? I’m trying to see where these bolts are located. I have P400

they are for the exhaust manifold which is integrated with the turbo. You wont see then unless you take off the heat shields around the manifold/turbo.
and its for the p400.

Such a weird coincidence. I discovered 1 broken bolt on my P400 yesterday. Dangling underneath. Seems like a major job to repair. I suspect this may not be the only bolt I've lost, just the only one I'm aware of.

Removal of the supercharger and cat needed to get to them. Removal of the intercooler to get to that. Removal of..... to get to that. 71k miles. These should not be failing so young.

Draining the coolant, removing upper cowel/bracing, intercooler, supercharger, cat and then the turbo. All that is fine but im dreading the extraction of the broken bolts. That's never fun or easy.

These parts to me seem insanely difficult. Getting that intercooler into service position for doing the spark plugs had me a questioning my will to live. Once I saw that step for removal of the supercharger I decided that this is probably a task beyond me. Maybe not. It's a very daunting prospect for a novice.

Getting the bolt(s) out after that. Yikes. So many things to potentially damage.

Can you describe the noise? Mine reminds me a bit of a diesel. Noticeable, but not super loud and goes away after 2-3 minutes or running. It sounds exactly like the videos @lilenday@gmail.com posted. I have had a car with a manifold leak and it doesn't sound like that to me, but I haven't yet started really poking my head around in the engine bay.

it sounded like a diesel when the noise first started. It didnt sound like an exhaust leak. Many other defenders sounded the same which is why I personally never investigated it. Must be "normal" i thought to myself. It has dramatically gotten worse in the past 2 weeks. Now its a full on unmistakable exhaust leak. The rattle in the mornings seems to have been the bolt rattling on the exhaust shield.
