Anyone move from Sport to Defender
Good Evening,
I have owned two sports over last 7 years a 2018 and 2021.5, both vehicles have been fantastic minus a few display issues at beginning in the 18 model. My current vehicle has been flawless with only normal service required. I love everything about them from comfort, driving position, to versatility. I am biased also because not one time has either vehicle ever stranded me, or had any real mechanical issues.
I am looking for a new ride and with the new sport still limited in availability and first year of production, I am considering a change to the Defender for a few years. Has anyone moved from the sport to defender and if so what are your thoughts on the change. I really love the comfort of the sport, but in researching here it appears like a lot of people still feel a bit of that comfort/luxury is there in the Defender. I am looking at the 110 X with air suspension.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

Some ramblings... all opinions.
-- I had a 2008 Supercharged Sport. 1st gen. I loved it. Bad *** vehicle. Looked great (like the Stormer prototype), sounded good, 4.2 supercharger whine. Utter crap plastic interior but I digress...
-- I had a 2012 5.0 Supercharged Sport. Put like 100K on it when I had a job out of state for a few years. Great car. Needed new timing chains. Sold for -->
-- 2016 Supercharged Dynamic L494. Fine. Never loved it really.
-- I then had an SVR L494. Made me hate incontrol. I felt like a jerk guy driving it around San Francisco. was not my vibe. Literally the only thing I liked about it was the exhaust sound and I had a couple sports cars that ticked that box better anyways. I also had several scary incidents in the car in Oakland one of which was I believe an attempted carjacking.
And while I owned these sports as my primary daily driver, I pretty much always had an older Discovery 2 or LR3/4 to offroad in. It all seemed to work out. I never offroaded or modified a Sport.
And... I'd say it's not even a contest. I like the L663 Defender ** WAY ** better than all of them. It's fun. I can beat the shhhh out of it offroad, which is a hoot. It's the car/truck I've always wanted LR to make. I added a bullbar and a winch to it. And I got an X, so it's a higher spec, and with P400 motor and air suspension.
BTW -- re: the new Sport L461. Doesn't move my needle... too painted-y, too pavement princess-y... simply nothing about it that gets me excited.
IMO Defender wins. Best JLR product I've ever owned.
I've always loved Discovery 1/2, LR3/LR4 far more than any of the Range Rovers in the line including the Sports. I'm more "Land Rover" than "Range Rover" (but I also own a 1988 Range Rover Classic.. it's cool, just a tractor). So the Deefer's a better fit for me.

I went from 2016 V8 Sport to 2019 SVR to 2024 Defender 110 V8.
Some thoughts. Have loved them all. I find the V8 Defender is similar to the others on the road in terms of drive feel. It feels planted. Not quite as urgent as the SVR so more relaxed. Pivi Pro kills the old Incontrol system which is an absolute dog.
I intend to keep this for a while. The new sport doesn’t do it for me as when I look at it from the rear I somehow just see Discovery. Something to do with the brake lights I think.
Probable full fat Vogue next!

I had my 2016 Sport V6 HST for nearly three years before jumping to my 2024 Defender P400 X dynamic. Both with air suspension.
You definitely sit taller in the Defender and the vehicle feels more up right/top heavy in comparison. I prefer the sporty Range seats and driving position but I still think Defender is comfortable. I wish I could lower the seat base more but not a deal breaker.
To me, both drove very similar in terms of comfort and road feel. Felt like I could take a turn a little faster with the Sport but that’s by design with its lower center of gravity.
Bit more wind noise in Defender with up right windshield and single pane windows, but again not a real issue. If I had to choose today between the 2 trucks I’m going Defender.
Test drive to see how the seats/seating position feel. You can always get a GAP tool to lower the suspension and enable Dynamic mode to make it feel more “Sport”like.

had a sport several years ago. great road manners, great looks, and great city/suburb SUV.
the defender gives me enough of the on road feel and overall "vibe" of the sport, but is so much better off road and never have to think twice about whether it can handle what i throw at it.
if i was purely an "on road" guy, it would be a tough call, but for my lifestyle, defender wins!

not to go against popular opinion but i feel they are very different trucks. Specifically if we are talking about the new generation Sport.
have both a v8 defender and new v8 sport in the garage. the new sport is a very refined and feels basically like a full size. Luxurious in every way, very quite cabin and a far superior engine to the 5.0 v8. The new sport lost some of its “sport” characteristics like previous generations and i would say the only negative if that mattered to you
That being said i love my Defender. For my purposes it checks all boxes. When people ask me about the Defender my short and general description “a very nice truck”

Went from a 2015 RRS autobiography v8 (Michelin all season) to defender p400 with Goodyear duratrac all terrain. Sport ride was great, defender a little more truckish. Really forced myself away from the v8 just on principle, don’t regret it from performance point of view, but the ego hurts. I think it depends on your style = urban/highway/country club RRS. Rural small roads, more severe weather Defender. Both are very capable in either.
Prior to getting our 2024 Defender 110 SE X-Dynamic, I had a 2011 RR Sport HSE Lux and a 2017 RR Sport HSE.
I definitely am enjoying the Defender more than either RR Sport. The Defender is definitely more rugged and truck-like. I also am running off-road tires for the first time. But, I still find the car plenty luxurious and comfortable for long road trips.

I’ve have had 3 land rovers:
1) 2018 Range Rover sport SE
kinda perfect, great efficiency, power and luxury. Nice handling. Capable offroad. No lockers or low range.
2) 2020 defender SE
Less luxe interior, handling was worse than the sport, noisier on the freeway, maintenance issues, more capable offroad with lockers and low range.
3) 2023 defender V8
best of both worlds. Luxurious, powerful, good handling, amazing offfroad, unique, sounds good.
moral of the story; don’t cross shop the basic defenders against the range rovers. If you want ranger rover levels of sophistication and budget is not an issue, go for the higher specced defenders.
if you care about going offroad more, go basic defender
if you like handling and luxury and road feel, Range Rover sport.
