Anyone in US using Long Range Tanks
Hi,
I only found one post about Long Range tank and it is pretty old so I am asking here. I think that the Long Range Tanks are very interesting so I wonder if anyone has installed them and how that went? I see that they are labeled on NewDefender mods as Off road only but I am not sure how you enforce that. Obviously you can’t take them on and off.
When I am towing the gas mileage is not great. This would be a great mod and since it is a direct replacement you would think it met all the emissions stuff. I love CA but this may be a time when I am out of luck. There are some regulations about CARB or something that the Grenadier add on tanks say will not sell to CA. However those are not replacements but add ons and maybe the vapor capture is not maintained.
I also wonder if this is something that would be an easy install for DIY?

I have had them installed and they are great. Not sure where the notion of fraud only comes from. I am happy I gave them on every road trip. I upgraded to the heavy duty option which had thicker material added to the bottom side. Am totally happy.
"Off road use only" is typically used to indicate that the part being sold requires some level of regulatory approval - but in this case doesn't have it therefore it can only be for off-road use. It's a lawyer thing but it can lead to issues if you get in an accident and it pops up in an investigation.

Fuel tanks on cars are subject to federal regulations in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) oversee the approval process for fuel tanks.
In the United States, fuel tanks must meet specific safety and emissions standards set by NHTSA and EPA. The NHTSA regulates fuel tank safety, while the EPA regulates emissions. Manufacturers must obtain approval from both agencies before selling fuel tanks in the US market.

It does not read normally. I am still learning the mental adjustments. If I took time I would refill when it said 3/4 a couple times for consistency, then move to 1/2, refill and then at 1/4 etc. frankly, when I have hit the road last 3 times have had 2000 mile legs each way and I just went until I was near empty. I will begin records as I think about it.
This is a shot in the dark but years ago I had a F-350 and installed a larger fuel tank. Took it to the dealer after and they were able to use their interface to program in a new fuel capacity so the gauge would read correctly. I wonder if the people who make the GAP Tool know of a setting that could be modified with a new capacity for you Defender.
No, unfortunately we can't. CCF changes are akin to having a hidden settings menu. The IIDTool provides the user with this menu, but all settings are pre-programmed by LR. IIRC there are CCF settings that have to do with the fuel tank, but nothing anywhere near the capacity of the Long Ranger tank (I assume this is the tank in question?). I'll check and report back.
Thanks everyone. … Nice to know someone has done it. CA can be a little tricky but not sure anyone is looking under my truck.
When towing a small off-road trailer my gas mileage was pretty bad. Might not be so bad at low speed I was coming back from Utah and the road from Utah to CA is very fast. Doing less than 90 I might get run over.
Researching a winch bumper and some armor for my 110X. I have decided not to change to a Grenadier. Although today I asked my wife what if I sold my BMW and added a Grenadier … she said it is up to you ….

Im genuinely curious what trips in the lower 48 / Canadian provinces/Mexican tamales? would make use of a long range tank.
I struggle to find where I can get more than 400 miles from a gas station.
no doubt these places exist, and I salute those who get there but where are they?
I can whack an extra 5 gallons of gas on the car no worries and not have to address the expense of a long range tank. I could drive to northern Alaska without worry.
I lived in Queensland for many years. Long range tanks were a practical necessity for many folks. I’m the states I just don’t see the need. Civilization has taken hold in the interior.
