Best eBike rack recommendations: 3 e-bikes + rear door access – 2024 Defender 110
Hi everyone,
I have a 2024 Defender 110 (US-spec) and I’m looking for recommendations for an eBike rack setup that can safely carry 3 e-bikes and still allow access to the rear door / tailgate.
Key details:
• I do not currently have a hitch installed, so I’m open to the best overall solution (OEM or aftermarket).
• I’m open to hitch-mounted or spare-tire-mounted options, but stability and safety are my top priorities.
• Planning for 3 mid-range e-bikes (estimating ~55–65 lbs each).
• Ideally, I’d like a setup that allows the rear door to swing open without unloading all bikes (tilt or swing-away solutions welcome).
Questions:
What rack setups are you using to carry 3 e-bikes on a Defender 110?
Which racks actually work well with the rear spare tire?
Is a swing-away adapter the best solution for door access, or are there racks that tilt far enough on their own?
Any issues with sensors, stability, highway driving, or long-term wear?
I’d really appreciate real-world experience and specific rack/model recommendations. Thanks in advance.
We have two e-bikes and use the Kuat Pivot for swing away function because it is epically solid and a 1up Xtreme duty rack. IMHO, after decades of Thule stuff, the 1up is in a whole different league. As you know, e-bikes are really heavy and this rack is more than up to the weight, on or off road.
I had a Mercedes 2017 GLS also searched for a 3 e-bike solution. I ended up with a Kuat NV 2.0 and the added the NV 2.0 add-on for the third bike. To swing them out of the way, I then added Kuat Pivot V2. When I got my 2023 Defender 110, the set-up transferred over perfectly as the Pivot V2 gave the extra length needed to get the rack out beyond the rear mounted spare.. I can now swing 3 bikes well out of the way in the same direction as the rear door and open the rear door fully. You just need lots of room to do it in a parking lot.
Not an inexpensive solution, but I've done thousands of km with 3 e-bikes on the rack without issue. The built-in locking cables on the rack are great, and installation is straight forward and very secure feeling. Also the Kuat equipment seems to hold value well, so if you find you don't need it someday, you can recoup some of the investment.
As noted above, 1UP. So solid, easy to use and made in the USA. They offer different versions to match the weight of your bikes. If swinging out of the way is important, get their RakAttach.
