Default boost cut weirdness

2020 p300 91k miles

Started having a weird issue after leaving the car parked at the airport for a little over a week. The power delivery felt very jerky around 3k rpm. Almost like the transmission was slipping. The yellow check engine light flashed on the dash a few times but didn't stay on. The vehicle seems to have went into limp mode as it could barely maintain 65mph on flat ground. But there were no warnings on the dash and my code reader showed no logged faults (cheap bluetooth reader). Pulled over and did the 10mm reset and that was enough to get me home. I am still intermittently having the issue when accelerating around 3k rpm. I have a snorkel, so the turbo sounds are piped directly to the cabin. It sounds like the boost is being cut when the power fluctuates as the sound isn't consistent. The rpms drop about a 100 when this happens, but only for a fraction of a second. It seems to me there is a fuel or air issue, but without a code I don't know where to start. Any ideas?

I can't claim most of the miles. Long story short, I sold the p300 I ordered during the car price craziness and bought a d5. The d5 was garbage. Saw this p300 with all the right options for sale locally with just over 80k miles at a good price. Traded in and got a new set of problems. But thats life with a land rover.

Following up with this post for the next person that has the issue. I do have a short video I took when the issue first started, but I don't see an obvious way to upload a video.

I did short trip after the issue originally started and I ran the fuel to about 40 miles remaining range to determine if bad fuel was the cause. Didn't have the issue for about 600 miles, so I thought all was well. But it came back and triggered limp mode again (no warning lights or error codes). 10mm reset and off I went. The land rover key chain they give with new purchase should really be a 10mm wrench and not some useless leather strap...

It felt like either a misfire or a transmission slip, so I had a full transmission flush at a local shop that services LRs. I planned to do this at 100k miles any way. I was able to reproduce the issue immediately after leaving the shop. So it doesn't seem to be transmission related.

I thought pathfinder might find some fault code that my reader didn't. Mechanic said it didn't show anything obvious, but recommended changing the spark plugs and PCV valve. PCV valve is part of a plastic cover. On previous LRs the PCV valve was serviceable and had tabs to pop it off. There is a PCV service kit for the defender for like $30, but the tabs are no longer there. So you will likely do damage removing the PCV valve. Maybe some still have the tabs. I replaced the entire cover. Easy job. I also replaced the spark plugs. Another easy job. Just be sure to use a 14mm socket with an outside diameter of 19mm or less. 20mm will get stuck in the hole.

After replacing the PCV valve and plugs, I have not been able to reproduce the issue. I just did a 1600 mile round trip this past weekend and had zero issues.

Parts I replaced listed below. I purchased from them LR Virginia Beach. Cheapest I found at the time.

Desc. - Part # - price paid:
Vent cover - LR110348 - $151.65
Spark Plug - LR091617 - $23.06 x 4

Picture with the vent cover removed.

Interesting and good post. So you think it was a misfire then? That would make sense.

Curious as to any other things you're seeing with 91K miles (that may be a record on here).

Good post, thx.
But let's look into the PCV valve service kit further. If JLR this supplies it has to be possible to replace..

It is possible to remove. I pulled my old one apart after I knew the new one was working. I had to pry it open with a flat screwdriver, which deforms the plastic. The valve itself looked okay, but did seem slightly stretched on one side. The older PCV valves had tabs that could be lifted to pop it off. My concern was I'd damage the housing while prying it off and have to replace the entire cover anyway. Pic of the old style below. The one I removed did not have those tabs.
