Are the CarPlay Next/Back buttons unreliable on steering wheel for you?
This used to happen in a RR Sport I've owned and I'd thought they would have fixed it by now but the back and forward buttons for changing music tracks from the steering wheel work 90% of the time and sometimes wont work for 10 seconds or more and then they start working again. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is it fixed in firmware I haven't had yet? Worth talking to the dealer or a non-starter?

I have not experienced the exact same problems you relate, my steering wheel next/back buttons have worked since delivery, but my CarPlay did have a hiccup after updating to iOS 18. Shortly after the update the audio quality sounded like a handheld transistor radio. Tinny, no bass, and going into audio settings there was no response to attempts to change balance or fader or subwoofer. Went the simplest route and did a hard reset of the PIVI and the iPhone and all has been well since.
Both of our LR4's had this issue as do our Defenders including the new one we have had for a week. Apparently it's part of it's British personality.
At least with the Defender you can tap one of the next station arrows on the touch screen and the thumb buttons on the steering wheel usually wake up again.
I have a theory here. I notice this on mine too. But I don't think it's the CarPlay / pivi or really even a software issue, I think it's the ****ty plastic buttons on the left switch pack of the steering wheel. Whatever supplier designed this switchpack on the left did a poor job. It's too bad, the rest of the switchgear is very good in the car at least if I'm the reviewer.
When I'm in the menus trying to look at my tire (tyre) pressure, or scrolling thru my various warnings or navigating menus I've decided to conquer, it is maddening, I have to repeatedly press the button to move around. Switches in this left side switch pack do not have positive engagement, and it is a poor quality component. Button presses (any button) are erratic & intermittent. Also the scroll-y wheel feels so loose it might fall out of the thing entirely. When new, I had the dealer look at it and they said "working as designed"
The switch pack and buttons on the right of the steering wheel seem to work reliably, and 100% of the time on first press. (heated wheel, cruise and distance control, up down speed selection, etc). So they got that one right.
Interestingly, in many of the initial reviews of the new L460 Full Fat Range Rover in 2022 -- reviewers commented on a cheap feeling switch component on the left side of the steering wheel. And guess what... look familiar?

I had my Defender in to the dealership last week for this exact issue. They couldn’t find a problem so due to my second check engine light in 2 weeks it’s going back in and am going to have them fix. Will provide video evidence to them. I’d say mine work about 60% of the time but oddly performance is improved with car run time. It’s like the software supporting the buttons takes a while to kick in lol.
