Default Check Engine Light question

All,

I have a 2022 110 SE P400. My vehicle has 7900 miles on it. My check engine light came on solid and I called my dealer to schedule an appointment to get it checked out. They said since it was solid and not flashing that its not an emergency and I can drive it as normal. My appointment isn't until Jan 4th, which they said is first available.

After about 2 weeks, the light went off on its own. I'm thinking I should still keep the service appointment to have them hook it up to the computer and see what the code was, perhaps a faulty sensor or something. Anyway, I called the dealership and they said that unless the light is on when I bring it in, they can't diagnose it. I'm not sure if this means they can't submit a warranty claim if the light isn't on or the vehicle literally doesn't keep a log of error codes.

Do you guys think I should still take it in to get checked even if the light stays off, or should I just let it go? I'm also waiting for a recall to be done, but the dealer has allegedly been waiting for the parts to perform the recall for 8 months. If I do cancel it, assuming the parts ever arise, I can have them check then I guess.

Thanks for the advice.

I would take it in anyway, especially given how long it sometimes takes to get an appointment. It's probably emissions related if it went away, but it might be good to have an official record of it with the dealer in case it becomes a recurrent problem.

Sounds like your dealership is giving you the brush-off. To say that unless the light is on, they can’t do anything to diagnose it reeks of poor customer service. To my knowledge, any warning light should leave a code that can be recalled to investigate the cause. Time to find another dealership, one that cares about the customer.

That was my sense as well. With all the electronics and computer systems this thing has, I can't imagine the car doesn't maintain a log of error codes that have been triggered.

I think they mean that without the condition still existing they can't troubleshoot it. The codes often represent several possible causes and require troubleshooting to isolate. It doesn't pay to do an Easter egg hunt and just start replacing all the different things it could be. I have had codes come up like that on many different brands, including Land Rover. Some never ever came back.

This is a classic example of why it is worth it to spend the $15 to buy a code scanner. Your light can be anything from your gas cap is loose, to impending tranny failure. So buy a scanner that will work with your phone off eBay or Amazon and get an app that will support. Personally, I like OBD Fusion's app. It has loads of features and supports a host of OBD readers. I just recently upgraded my reader to a Bluetooth one, vice WiFi version. It is a Veepeek and does all the scanning functions, just hooks up faster to the wireless. OBD Fusion offers a lot of gizmo functions, like lots of user selectable gauge packages that will display on your iPhone or iPad and also do maps showing milage along a route. Guess what, It shows that the car uses more fuel going uphill vice downhill. Who would have guessed. Anyhow you get a cool looking map color coded to milage.

So do yourself a favor and get a scanner. Why the dumb display does not tell you this stuff, like have a maintenance page, is infuriating. But no car out today seems to have that. Then you can sound all knowledgeable and tell the dealer that you engine is misfiring on #4 cylinder. BTW, new/used, big price difference. Get a used one on eBay for a whole lot less, they don't exactly wear out.

I would suggest taking it in as well. Our light came on a few times (after getting gas, guessing the attendant didn't screw on right) but then would go back off a few days later. Then we just had the Defender in to replace the front windshield....oddly the light went off again. The dealer checked and the thermostat is bad and needs to be replaced (under warranty). It only takes them a sec, have it checked out.

Btw, ours is a 2022 and just turned 14k miles. Have had it for 1.5 years.

Did you manage to sort it out? If so, what was the problem? We received our 2023 X-Dynamus HSE this week. It has done 250 Miles, and the engine light has come on. Phoning the dealership tomorrow.

The light ended up coming back on and didn't go off in the month and a half or so. I took it to a different dealer who's service department in general seems to actually have the ability to follow up with things so that's nice.

While waiting for the service appointment, I had 2 incidents where the car wouldn't start while having my foot on the break and pressing the start button. I reported that to the dealership as well. They said the engine light was for vapor leak, but then cleared the code and didn't see any evidence of faulty sensors and the tried to trigger it several times, but it wouldn't come back. They also noted to make sure you click the gas cap twice when you put it on. Seems very strange. but okay.

They also replaced the starter motor. I've had it back about a month now and all seems well. No recurring lights.
