@sacharama nothing extraordinary, for now. Just a Rhino Rack weatherproof luggage bag (to address the non existing trunk of the D90, given it will be four of us on that trip) and a set of Maxtrax on a Front Runner mounting kit.
I will document the installation of the Front Runner mounting kit on the Expedition Rack.
Post maiden voyage have been looking at roof tents too...

Here is an idea for a cheap mounting method for maxtrax. You can use rox straps and hook them up to the rear wheel. Here is a video from youtube, it is super cheap and easy. I like the ability to have things on my defender when I need them but be able to quickly take them off when I don't need them.

I like it. Front runners actually sells something to mount it to the spare but it's $150 (and it's basically the same principle)!!
I am on the fence as to installing the Front Runners mounting kit on the rack as if I end up putting a roof tent then that will not work anymore. Thanks for the idea!

Had not had a chance to report back. Your suggestion was golden. Did 5,000+ miles with your suggested arrangement and worked like a charm. I actually returned what I had bought from FrontRunner (to secure them to the roofrack) and will stay with this as my method to keep the MaxTrax. Saved me $$ and time. As usual the forums deliver. Thanks @ADVAW8S !!
