Are there any Defender 90 owners with rooftop tents? It seems most of the tents that I see are on 110s and I’m not sure how well those would fit on a 90. I’m looking for advice from D90 owners on what worked and didn’t work for them. Pictures would be awesome too.
I’ll be getting my 90 soon. My roof tent goes on my old 2015 Defender 90 and see no reason why it shouldn’t work - but it is one of the fold out soft top tents (Autohome Overzone) rather than a hard top so has a smaller footprint on the roof.
Found this online and you wouldn’t really want it being any bigger….
Ikamper mini fits perfectly! Almost feels like it was made specifically
for the D90. Only con is be prepared for your already dismal MPG to get even worse. Cost of membership, I suppose.
Yeah, I've pretty much figured that based on size alone, an iKamper skycamp mini or James Baroud (any of the small versions) are about what I would be comfortable with on my 90 if I ever decide to get a RTT.
I have been wondering the same thing. Was also looking at this one. I like that it is fairly low profile when closed and also like the idea of having optional cross bars. Like the iKamper, it is $$$$ !!
iKamper quality is great. Had one on a couple of Landcruisers over the years. Great product that is worth the expense based on how it works and how it lasts.

Thanks for the pic. That really helps see how well it fits. I kinda figured I would have to go with one that size.
But I kinda wanted a full clam shell type like the Badass Tent or the Roofnest Falcon. The problem with those type is they are 85” to 90” long. That would hang over the windshield or off the back, which may not be too bad but I’d like to see someone who has done it before I drop $3-$4k into a tent.
I very unscientifically took a tape measure to the roof of my D90 and it was about 80inches long front to back, maybe a little longer, but generally 80inches. I don't have a roof rack, so I only measured the roof. James Baroud makes a clam shell tent that is 200cm long (~78.7in). They are pretty expensive tents but seem to review really well and be feature rich. An option worth exploring if a person isn't super tall I suppose. https://www.jamesbaroud.com/en/produ...l-tents/space/
Something to consider on an RTT. Weight. I had a Autohome clamshell for a brief period. I got rid of it quickly. It was too heavy. When you put an RTT on your vehicle it dramatically moves the CG up. This gives you a very pronounced body roll, especially in the mountains. Also to consider if you have more than one item on your rack, you may exceed the roof static loading. After having my full size Range Rover Supercharged get rolls after the Autohome, I then searched for the lightest tent I could find for two people. I ended up settling on the Yakima, which clocked in at 95 lbs, nearly half of the clamshells. One other downside, from my standpoint, my wife loathed the clamshell. She oddly loves the Yakima, feels more spacious to her. It really does not take any more time to set up, unless you use the rain fly, then it adds about 5 minutes. It also has a much smaller footprint than the clamshell, so you can squeeze a couple more items on your roof. I was fortunate to make my decision while REI had a 20% off coupon sale, couple that with the dividend it was practically free after I used my dividend accumulated that year. Anyhow, the car handles better now without feeling a bit like I'm back at sea with the body roll. The Yakima seems to fair better in high winds than many others that where camped concurrently with me at a field outing.
I have to decide which I like better the Expedition Roof Rack, or retrofitting my Front Runner. The 90 does not have a ton of usable real estate on the roof. I also have fabbed my own mounts, so I can at least get one Rotopax 5 gallon pack under the tent. The tent's mounts and my mounts combined step it up a bit, but I fabbed up more practicable wind deflector to ease some of the drag.

Do I need a separate cross bars on the expedition rack for Ikamper mini?
