Default Defender 90 - smaller engine

First post , great forum.....

Looking to order a 90 - is the smaller motor sufficient ?

Currently in a 2017 full size RR with TD6

Loved mine, although I can see them discontinuing it because that’s what they are doing with the 130 and it just makes sense.

Wow that would probably mean discontinuing the 18” steel wheels which imo would be tragic.

I went with the p300 on my 90. To me it's plenty of power for the 90 and even for the 110 that I test drove it seemed sufficient to me. On the other hand if you're in the mountains or towing then I think the p400 is really tough to look past even at the 10k more price tag, I would have to pay up if that were my use-case The other thing is on this forum I do get the sense, a rumbling, that far more people purchased the p400 yet the p300 seems to have had more 'issues' mentioned out here. Mine had some stalling at low speeds that was never really resolved yet. It's not critical. It's rare that it happens. At every other time which is 99.9% of my driving experience I have to say this engine has absolutely met and or exceeded my expectations. It's one of those things though if I had to do it over again I would maybe push myself a little more towards the p400, but trust me I get it the extra 10k is very significant. Your call.

thank you for the info ... I wont be towing with this vehicle (other than a small flats boat a few times a year) and we are in Miami - no mountains

with 70k on my L405 RR I am about ready for a new toy

I have a 110 P300. About 17K miles including quite a bit of mountain and high desert. Zero issues and plenty of power for me. Between the extra cost, reduced fuel economy, and lack of 18” steelies, I would certainly get the 300 again.

The 2.0 liter ingenium aj200 engine is very reliable and currently is the only p300 variant that is not a mild hybrid. It is the lightest and the least complex of the current offerings here in the states. Dont get me started on the v8 option... The p400e is also the aj200 just with PHEV technology consisting of an added electric motor. I doubt jlr will abandon the aj200 in the defender, but i guess it is possible. I hope jlr does not switch all driveline options to mhev/phev, but it looks like it is trending that way. It would be cool if the detuned 6 cylinder being offered in the p300 130 would have shed its mild hybrid technology, but it doesn't seem like that is the case.
