Yea I’m surprised, would’ve thought a big under-stressed engine would be most reliable. Assuming it’s either a) overly complex b) tuned to not be under-stressed or c) a & b
I have a D90 P300, and generally speaking, it has plenty of power. The only caveat to that is there are moments when I try to pass someone, and the power is almost non-existent for about 2-3 seconds, which has made me very uncomfortable on multiple occasions.
It's the same v8 engine the jlr has been using since 2010. It's very well documented how problematic this engine is. The rumor is that jlr is dumping all of these last V8 engines into the defender before they switch over to the BMW v8. The open deck block design is so susceptible to overheating, that even the smallest issue with the cooling system can have catastrophic consequences. Blown head gaskets and warped heads are very commonplace. Well known issues with timing chains.and various other issues. It's unfortunate how many clients we have to give bad news to when it comes to engine issues and catastrophic failures. The previous generation Jag engine was a lot more robust and much less problematic. Time will tell how well the new bmw v8 will last. If keeping for just the warranty period, the 5.0 v8 is fine.
The 4.4 bmw v8 is a very reliable motor, i had the s63 in an m5 a couple years ago and beat the **** out of it. Track days, smacking it in to a wall, and city driving. It did burn a ton of oil. About 1 qt every month or so. I want a hydrogen or diesel variant tho.

Do you feel this is specific to the p300 though. I test drove both engines and felt the p400 had some significant turbo lag too, I'm guessing that's what it is. Granted the p400 is much more of that snap your head back kind of power when it does hit.

I've yet to experience this lag, granted the car is still brand new.... but it's got some really good get-up-and-go
I test drove both- in 110's even though I was ordering a 90. I didn't feel a measurable difference (although others might). Further, I don't expect my 'truck' to drive like my 911. For my money, it had all the power that I needed. Now awaiting build and delivery.....
Did some mountain driving yesterday with the P300 at 8500 feet elevation. Haute Alpes, Risoul/Vars France
Drove some red/black ski pistes with inclines of 40 degrees, not a single issue. Always power.
Love this engine, downside is fuel economy...
Ps. This area is the territory of the Alpine Marmot, we've seen plenty of them fully fat and almost ready for their winter sleep of 7 months.

They will most likely discontinue the 4-Cylinder version of the P300. The 130 has a detuned 6 Cylinder version of the P400, called P300 for 2023.5MY and it's a MHEV, Supercharged, and Turbocharged. So it makes little sense to keep the 4-Cylinder version anymore. I got corporate info from LR saying it's likely it will be discontinued, not sure when, they're testing out the new 6-Cylinder P300 with the 130 S Model only (which is by request only, no dealer will order it if it's not a sold order), plus it's got more torque than the 4-Cylinder P300. The 4-Cylinder P300 gets the same MPG as the P400 yet is less powerful, so why keep it? LR doesn't want to sell lower end Defenders anymore, check the 2023.5MY pricing vs 2020MY-2021MY for example. I made a post on it back in July, here:
