Really don’t like this. I actually still think it was weird to turn Ram into a brand. I’m used to saying “I drive a model_name”. So like, I drive a Range Rover Sport or, I drive a Defender. Now it’ll be, “I drive a Sport” 😂
There's another thing to consider here too. The Defender only became the Defender in 1983. Before that the utility models had no model name, the brand name and model name being the same. People just called them a Land Rover, as they had done since 1948.
Anyone remember the Acura Legend?
Honda did just the opposite with the "Legend" brand. They had conducted studies and found the "Legend" nameplate had a higher recognition than the "Acura" brand did....So they eliminated the Legend nameplate. Proved to work out well for them....Bet ya gotta think real hard as to what they rebadged the big sedan as? I think it was the RL?
As a die hard Acura/Honda fan, I must say i couldn't disagree wit this more. The Legend was such a great car and built a brand for itself that people yes began to notice the legend name more than Acura. They dropped 'storied' names like Legend in place for RL, and Integra in place for RSX/TSX eventually. Arguably they're seeing the light, as the Integra is back and is the only vehicle in their line up with a real name. And its selling like hot cakes (for now). Cadillac did the same with the XTS LS TX whatever the ef. When they too had storied names like Deville, Eldorado, etc. And even they're starting real names again with the EVs: Lyricq. Escalade was was a real name that never went anywhere and is probably the poster child of a model name surpassing the brand name for recognition and credibility. No one gives a **** if u own a Cadillac, but to say you have an escalade, people know what that is and have a POV. (recognition).
That said I have no problem with 'sub brands.' There are multiple broncos. Rumors of a 4 door EV Mustang (Sedan not crossover thingy). Chevy is talking about a Corvette SUV for a while now. But Chevy and Ford will never go anywhere. Theres too much cache in the brand name, and frankly There is with Land rover as well. So I'm not sure why they chose to do this.
The results in practice I dont think anyone gave a **** and were gonna buy them anyway. But over time Acura has as a brand gone down hill in terms of recognition and prestige. The RL and the RLX that came after it were both completely anonymous and largely forgotten/never sold well after the Legend name was killed.
While I don't agree with this brand move either (LR dropped in favor of these three), I have to say the opposite didn't work as well.
I say give cars a brand, and give each a real name. That builds a brand in and of itself over time. There is a reason why ford bought back the 'bronco' and chevy keeps recycling things like Malibu/Blazer, etc. Embrace the model name's own lineage, but that doesn't mean the brand should step aside
