I got this one from Lucky 8 because I wanted the boards to lay flat on the rack (not diagonally - because I need to go in parking garages). And I love it - I don’t leave them on the car all the time, but I leave the brackets on the car all the time. They only add about an inch to the height of the car. To get to these though, you really do need a ladder to get up top -- and it works great for me, because I have the side ladder. So I hop up, grab them and wala. The only downside I have encountered in 3 years of use is one time it was extremely icy and there was so much ice on the top of the car, I could not unscrew the hardware. But that’s not really a fault of this mounting system. Anyway. I’m a big big fan of this system. Note that it works with the Tred Pro ARB boards which have also held up for 3 years with moderate use. (they are accordingly expensive...) https://lucky8llc.com/products/recov...2d1689a0&_ss=r
They also make another mount whereby the boards are kind of hanging off the side of the rack -- that’s this --> These you can stand on the side of the car and get them without clambering up the ladder. But they add 6” or so to the height of the car which was an issue for me. Even when the boards are off the car. (boo). https://lucky8llc.com/products/proud...c153031c&_ss=r
Some people also put them on the spare tire through various holders -- but I don’t like putting anything other than a Trasharoo on the spare tire because -- it is beyond annoying to have to change a spare tire and have to remove recovery gear from the spare to do so in inclement conditions or precarious conditions. So -- no recovery boards or equipment go on my spare. Ever. Just my philosophy. Maybe dumb.
@GavinC During the winter, any issues with your skis hitting the traction boards?
No although it's a little tight with the twin tipped skis I got this year. Not a problem though. I only bring the boards when I expect the lots to be deep with unplowed snow. Things get a bit hairy at times and it's nice to be able to bury yourself into a choice unplowed spot without worry. I've managed to activate my extended height in the snow on more than one occasion.
My boards get plenty of use year round it seems. Terrible driver me.
