I am interested in side steps for my 2021 Defender, but don't like the silver rim around the factory option (doesn't look right on a black car with black wheels). There are all-black aftermarket steps but the dealer won't install them. Does anyone know if the step itself and the rubber mat on top of the step can be removed for powder coating? Disappointed that Land Rover does not have an all-black option.
Thanks...
l repainted mine the same colour as the car Fuji White using 2k urethane paint. The steps are easily removed by unscrewing them from the tubes.
The rubber mats are bonded to the die castings and can’t be removed so I just used masking tape to cover them for painting.
A really important thing to do is to fully scuff the original powder coat with Scotchbrite pad before painting with the body colour. This is necessary to ensure there is good adhesion for the new topcoat so that you minimise stone chip and scratch damage. After three months mine don’t have any chips and still look like new.
