My point exactly. While fretting about the Defender gathering data on your driving habits, I don’t believe anyone is going to ditch their smartphones and start looking for the nearest pay phone. Which, by the way, are mostly extinct. Much ado about nothing.

It's never futile.* GM threw in the towel when word got out, after all. To stay a human being, one must resist!

I don't have a car yet, but I'd want to know (1) what these vehicles can tattle about and to who; (2) how to make sure I'm not swept into a monitoring and tattling system if it's avoidable; and (3) how to disable the spyware systems even if I'm supposedly not a spy ring victim.

(*It's not your phone that spies on you, it's the services you use such as those from Google that does. The particular search and map systems I use on my phone don't tattle on me, for example. And for a car, data privacy is potentially more serious, too, as data can be used against you if you have an accident, etc.)

Easy, friends. I’m well aware of the commercial and governmental tracking abilities, but that doesn’t mean I should just throw up my arms.

I simply do t want jlr selling my driving data to my insurance company for profits I don’t think they are entitled to.

feel free to care about this or not, but some of your posts seem to miss the point.

BTW, in a few states, or at least in California anyway, telematics aren't allowed to be used to set insurance rates. They almost certainly slurp up the info for other uses, though.

It's amusing - but sickening - to hear manufacturers frame telematics as for your benefit rather than for the obvious genuine motivation: the monetization of your data.

Going further, why do you think car manufacturers are starting to turn their backs to Apple Car Play and Android Auto? It's so the manufacturers can capture your data and sell subscriptions by default instead of Apple or Google.

Is that what they do? l didn't know that. So if your driving is poor, or you go to dodgy locations, you get higher insurance premiums but never know the reason why?

Defendher, I think maybe a better approach would be to find a lawyer member to pinpoint in the T&Cs and LR's Privacy policy where the selling of data exists, then notate that in a petition and circulate that here on the boards and maybe the admins would be willing to pin it.

Gotta change the rules if you want change.

I would totally get behind that, and I think millions of LR owners would also. You could post it amongst all the boards here to start with.

My earlier comment was more of a self reflection in my attempts to always subvert being tracked to have my data given away, and it's felt endless.

Default BMW appears to allow owners to opt out of telematics

Based upon a recent press release, it appears that BMW provides for the telematics on their vehicles to be disabled:

"All BMW vehicle interfaces permit consumers to opt in or out of various types of data collection and processing that may happen on their vehicles. If they choose, BMW customers may opt out of ALL optional data collection relating to their vehicles at any time by visiting the BMW iDrive screen in their vehicle. In addition, BMW drivers may, at any time, completely disable the transfer of any data from BMW vehicles to BMW services by disabling their embedded SIM on their vehicles via contacting BMW and completing a form. However, many customers voluntarily enable this feature, given that eCall and SoS calls would not be possible after the cellular connection to the vehicle is disabled."

See: https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/usa/a...2%80%9D-survey

BMW's option to opt out appears to offer BMW owners the freedom to make this choice for themselves.

I think overall and somewhat selfishly, I’m not looking to solve this for everyone. I’m content to solve it for myself, if it can be done by pulling a fuse.

To those who asked, yes your driving data is for sale. I’m almost as old as the freeway speed limit and based on the illegal malfeasance I’ve seen happen in corporate America, I don’t believe rate setting from telematics being illegal is a barrier to insurance companies. If they are caught, they will make up lies saying the data didn’t influence their rate decisions and their long term profits at your expense will handily cover any pittance of fines levied by the govt.
