Driving info collection without permission - how to stop?
JLR’s response to my privacy opt out request.
nothing in any privacy policy stops them from sharing your data we’ve seen numerous examples of what appeared to be explicit statements from companies saying they will not sell your data just to find out years later they sold your data.
I’d rather have a mechanical means of disabling the modem. On another vehicle of mine, I pulled the fuse to the modem. Does anybody know what fuse goes with the telematics module?

@Zondar I think this is an important discussion. As cars become more and more software-based the OEMs should make it very clear what data they are collecting, storing, and selling to third parties and allow us to turn it off. Data privacy should be a fundamental "human right".
My daughter is a technology privacy lawyer and I am fortunate to live in California with very strong CCPA laws, so I made a formal CCPA request to JLRNA for disclosure. I've made dozens of these with other companies and I am sometimes shocked at how much data they collect on me and to whom they sell it. Here is what I requested from JLR:
I will report back.

I've made dozens of these with other companies and I am sometimes shocked at how much data they collect on me and to whom they sell it. Here is what I requested from JLR:
- The categories of personal information Jaguar Land Rover has collected about me.
- The categories of sources from which the personal information was collected.
- The business or commercial purpose for collecting or selling my personal information.
- The categories of third parties with whom Jaguar Land Rover shares my personal information.
- The specific pieces of personal information Jaguar Land Rover has collected about me.
- Disclosure of any personal information that has been sold or given to third parties
I will report back.
Not holding my breath, but still got a big bag of popcorn and looking with interest: Texas sues General Motors, alleging illegal selling of driver data
JLR gives themselves "shrink wrap" permission (meaning if you buy or use the car you have tacitly agreed) to sell and share certain info, and this is very common in the industry as a whole.
So do they collect, sell or share your more intimate behavioral data (e.g. your "driving score", where you go, etc.) without informed permission? If you use their "incontrol" app, at least without opting-out if and where you can, then yes, they will claim you have given them your permission to do so. Here's their "privacy" policy again:
InControl privacy policy.
I saw a post by Defendher in which a JLR person stated that they do not "sell" telematic data. However, this is absolutely contrary to the extensive permissions they grant themselves to "share" data, as noted in the above link, unless you explicitly opt-out. So which is it?
Also, I note that JLR inserts tracking info into their links if you visit their web site, and if you do so, JLR gives themselves ludicrous levels of permission to collect everything they can get their hands on, including "sensitive" data, presumably meaning things like your sexual preferences, health information, etc. So these are not angels thinking only of your safety and privacy!
[utag=member.php?u=90747]Mojave[/utag] Can you please post your response to their survey? I also received one after I made a request under the CA law, but haven't responded yet.

Incognito window, one per site (all incognito windows existing at the same time share context) is the best you can hope for today. Open, visit, close. However, it's deeper than that - they also track your public IP address, and the browser signature (sounding like a broken record, https://amiunique.org/). And there was this class action lawsuit against Google for abusing the incognito mode quirks to collect PII. So, "don't do anything I wouldn't do".
"Everybody does it" doesn't make it right.
Yes, everyone does it. And it won't stop until every single electronic device will come with - and none without - its own wifi/LTE connection to the mothership that you can't control or shut off. Just like JLR's cars.
