Default Europaparts.com has aftermarket rear shocks

Europaparts has an aftermarket LR140075 for $315, This is right rear L663 adaptive shock.

As opposed to JLR for $1200-1400 uninstalled. I just cannot get my mind around paying that much for a part I know is going to fail again in 20-30k miles (even if thru FCP’s lifetime warranty, it’s a pain in the ****).

I asked them, what brand, they said “Hudson Brand” which I’ve never heard of. Guessing Chinese import rebranded. Kind of like Lucky 8’s “Proper Spec” they make up.

I am not one to buy aftermarket parts usually ever however -- given that I keep breaking the genuine LR shocks, clearly they aren’t great quality. I’ve broken 2 in 30K miles.

Anyone bought one ?

That is an unbeatable price. Thanks for sharing. How in the world did you brake two in 30k miles? Just curious!

Default RockAuto

Rockauto also has an aftermarket one. Theirs is by Arnott and is ~$500:

I don't kow anything about Arnott as a brand.

RockAuto do have many aftermarket parts for the L663, although the coverage can be spotty when a model is new. Some of the parts are by the OEM manufacturers. For example, I bought a cabin filter and the one that came out said Mahle along with a Land Rover part number, which is who made the aftermarket one. They were indistinguishable. Also maybe 10 years ago when I had a L332 I bought TPMS from them for like one fifth the cost of LR parts even from Atlantic British. Turns out they were the exact same part number and manufacturer as OEM!

Thanks for sending.

The Arnott one is more interesting to me. I’ve been using their air springs (airbags) on D2’s for years (instead of genuine LR) and have had great results. this would be different, because it’s a shock. But - Arnott is pretty good, at least in my mind (that may be a dated perspective).

What’s weird about that part is it shows the old part # LR132713 but not the superseded part # LR140075

IDK. Drove it to Moab for 2 weeks. A good bit of “owner abuse” - I’m not exactly easy on it when we’re offroading. That said, I do think these shocks should hold up. Every other component on the car’s suspension has held up.

Interesting. I have been on some pretty rough off road adventures but never had an issue with the shocks. Perhaps I was not as abusive as you are lol...

Arnott has been around for a long time and has a pretty reliable reputation. I would not hesitate buying Arnott products.

I don't think it's abuse to off-road a Defender. One of my rear shocks got deformed (they are hollow on the air ride so very prone to this). It was replaced under warranty and the replacement lasted less than a year. I think it was never torqued down to spec. The repair got me to the end of warrant so that's all they had to achieve. Pretty rubbish effort by my local dealer.

I'm going to go out on a limb and theorize that it's the shock on the side of the gas tank that's failing on most. The extra weight of 22gallons of gas takes its toll.

Now I have 1 possible 2 rear shocks that are loose in their mounts. Replacing both is doable with these aftermarket parts. I'm not dropping over 2k on rear shocks. $800 is doable and justifiable.

Am I correct in assuming that both right and left shocks are the same part number or is each shock sided? It is listed as right side on the website. @nashvegas

Yeah, different part # L and R.

And I know, I joke that I abuse it, I actually am very mechanically sympathetic to it, but ... I guess JLR didn’t really think the shock durability through !

Just an fyi, i installed some "aftermarket" rear electronic dampers in a client vehicle, and needless to say the shafts broke in 2500 miles. The factory ones will likely last the longest, but are the most expensive. I am leary of the aftermarket ones unless i see a substantial difference in the shaft design.
