Default First time buying real after market wheels: sizing help

I've decided to swap my 5098 22inch wheels for 20inch Vossen HF-5s with Wildpeak AT3/W 275/55r20 tires. Seen a few folks run this setup and pretty excited about it. My question is confirming the must have size for the wheels as I search for Vossen HF-5s around.

The bolt pattern MUST be 5x120 right to fit the car? can't be 5x114.3 as I keep seeing. I imagine the bolts wouldn't fit if so given the 5098s are 5x120 pattern.

I'm looking at a 20x9.5 wheel with a 25mm offset. But could do offset also be say 35mm? What changes? I imagine the wheels just move out just a touch from the car.

Thanks and sorry for the newb questions!

So the answer is yes the wheels must be 5x120 to fit without any modifications. However, if you found wheels you have to have and they don't come in that size, you can use a wheel adapter. The adapter will add about 1 inch of negative offset, ie move it outward. Adapters are basically spacers that also change the bolt pattern.

The offset can be misleading. If two wheels are the same width, then a change in +10 mm offset will move the wheel in about 1/2". The amount the wheel "sticks out" from the hub is: (wheel width / 2)-(offset / 25.4mm).
For stock 8.5 inch wide wheels it's: (8.5" / 2) - (41.5mm/25.4mm) = 2.6"
For your 20x9.5 it's: (9.5" / 2) - (25mm/25.4mm) = 3.8"

So without any wheel adapter, those wheels will stick out about 1 1/4 inch more than stock.

CurtyJ, another clarification for ya.

So I see a 20x9 wheel available with a 35mm offset that I could get. According to the math you showed above, then it would be 20x9 or (9/2 - 35/25.4) = 3.12 or so. So in the middle between stock and the other wheel I was discussing.

I assume a 275mm tire would be find on that despite the slight overhang. Others seem to be running 275mm on stock 8.5" wide wheels. Thanks!

Your math is correct with the different wheel. Wheels are good about being exactly what they specify. However, tires are a different story.

As far as the tire width, you have to be careful. Tires of the same size can be different among brands and even in the same brand with a different load range. For example, the Nitto Ridge Grappler 275/60/20 XL (extra load) is 32.99” tall and the same Nitto Ridge Grappler 275/60/20 that is Load range E (10-ply) is 33.23” tall. So anytime you change from stock you really need to do a fit test. Or hope that someone else in this forum already has with the same wheel width, offset, and exact tire size and brand.

I will caveat this with the fact that I used to work at a tire and wheel shop for 5 years, but I have no experience with changing from stock tires on my Defender or any Defender.

Thank you CurtyJ, I'll do my sanity checks on the overall diameter on the 275/55r20. What are your thoughts on an 275 tire on the 9" width rims?

275 on a 9” rim, I’d do that all day with no issues.

Now the fitment on the Defender at access height at full lock? I’d bet it would be fine, but YMMV

Awesome, thank you. I'll be re-double checking what others have experienced with those dimensions. Seems like it's a safe bet to have 275 so long as the offset is close to stock. But thank you for your help! Super useful info. much appreciated.

Hi. Sorry to dig up this old thread. I'm looking at the exact wheel/tyres combo but with a +32 offset. I do have the factory extended arch and want to be inline with the wheel. Does your set up rub at full lock at any height? What offset did you end up?

Many Thanks
