Default Heated Steering Bites the Dust

Unfortunately (and untimely, ala the LR special, given winter is upon us), my heated steering has quit working. The heated wheel button will illuminate on first press with no heat. Occasionally the button will not illuminate at all when pressed, but either way it will never heat up.

Unlike other reports here on the subject, there is no noticeable physical damage to the steering wheel and the fuse is good. It never sputtered out or anything. Battery voltage seems ok at 12.7v, so can’t be the alternator overload protection or dud battery. All other items on the left hand switch (ACC, limiter, etc) work and function as they should.

Im out of warranty so it will be on me to get this fixed. Is there an easy way to diagnose the problem? I’d like to avoid removing the entire wheel if it all possible out of fear of tripping the air bag. I suspect it’s the switch or perhaps loose connection.

My drivers seat heater is also starting to flake out. I hear and feel the fan, but no heat which actually causes cooling which is the opposite of what I want when it's 30ºF outside. Going to mention it to dealer when it goes in Monday for the other new issue which is a check engine light.

Sorry to hear that. Thankful mine is still kicking, although I don’t read of too many issues with the seat heaters that aren’t directly related to a blown fuse. I’ll trade you my heated seats for your heated steering wheel!

My 2020 had to get a new heated steering wheel. One day it just stopped working. Same deal, at times my yellow indicator lamp would illuminate, other times it would not, but never any heat. My fuse was good, etc.

I did notice a hot spot on the back side of the wheel right before it happened on a cold morning (at the time, I wasn't quite certain whether it was my imagination or not). Anyway, the remedy in my case was a new wheel. Apparently mine burned out. Replaced under warranty. I'd prob recommend getting a used one off ebay from a low miles vehicle etc.

The seat works at times though. I've always thought a fuse issue is pretty much binary. If fuse was dead I would think it wouldn't ever work.

Well that’s concerning. I’ve been periodically checking EBay for a used one, nothing as of yet.

I know this is likely not the case, but be sure you aren’t in “Eco” mode. Heated steering wheel won’t work if you are … at one point I thought mine was broken, but problem was with the driver, not equipment :-).

Selecting ECO mode turns off the heated seats/wheel on my 2022 but you can turn them on again and still remain in ECO mode.

Mine had the same issue, and after the dealer tried replacing the switch and then the wiring dongle, they replaced the entire steering wheel. About $4,000 total, fortunately under warranty.
