Help with Understanding Land Rover models
So if I’m understanding correctly, the evolution of each line goes:
Series I, II, III, Defender 90/110, end of the line in 2018 or so
Discovery 1, Discovery 2, LR3, LR4, LR5, Discovery (US Names)
LR2, Freelander, Evoque
Range Rover
So would the current Velar, Disco Sport, RR Sport, and Defender fit on the ends of any of those evolution lines, or do they get their own stand-alone lines? And is there more to the Range Rover line? Like you mentioned P38 — is there a line of RRs that gets us from the first one till now, like P38, P43, P48, P100 (I just made that up.)
Sorry for all the questions but I know all this **** for Porsches from 1948-present backwards and forwards, series codes, dates of release, engine updates, etc. and I’d just like to be better versed in LR history if I’m going to own one.
Thanks!

The 2nd generation (2016) Evoque was indescribably cute, extremely sophisticated for a small car and pioneered much of the 4WD logic and differential approach which is now in the Defender. I am not a fan that they added inches to new evoque and rounded every thing off --- makes it not drive the same nor as well.
The Velar is pure style inside the vehicle. You may read about it on the web in many places. It is really striking, and once a person (mostly women) experience the vehicle, it is hard for them not to crave it.
The LR2 and Freelander and Discovery 1 through 4 were all evolutionary efforts to make electronic off-roading capable. Steady progress was made, with some glaring errors (the Freelander is not a positive name in JLRs history). The new Defender is the culmination of that effort.
The Discovery sport is the entry level JLR vehicle -- it is a slight evolution of the LR2. It is designed to capture practical buyers and wed them to the brand when young.
The RR sport is the sports-car SUV within Landrover. It has a large choice of engines, many with more HP than a person needs
, lots of flash and looks designed in and lots of customization available. You can even get a small third row (similar to the one in the Defender) -- helps the better halves agree to buy the big motor some crave. With the launch of new Defender, Discovery 5 can what is needed most -- a capable, 7 seater, family hauler to school and the soccer field and the mall. This is the one which needs to take on and defeat Audi, BMW and Mercedes family SUVs.
The Range Rover stands alone. It remains the finest production all-purpose vehicle in the world (so many people believe). It is JLRs six figure expression of perfection.
Oh and don't forget the Stage 1 V-8 and the FC
