Default The helpful tip of the day...put a 10mm wrench in your glovebox.

Upon start-up this morning, my power steering decided to take the day off. Nearly impossible to move the steering wheel at all. Did a quick search here and the solution posted was to disconnect and reconnect the battery. (Thanks Muppetry!) That fixed the issue and I was on my way.

If it happens to you, move the passenger seat forward. From the second row, pull the tab to remove the battery cover. Loosen the 10mm bolt and disconnect the negative terminal. Wait about 5 minutes, reconnect the negative terminal and replace the cover. Start the vehicle and you should be all set.

Just like the Series IIa!! Only back then it was a massive hand crank that you could slide into the front bumper to hand crank the engine started. I had too use that a few times...

Yes - I haven't had to use it but I keep that wrench in the vehicle at all times. Glad it fixed the steering.

Don't knock the old hand crank. It had a ton of uses, besides actually starting the engine, which was a hoot to do. The best was taught to me by an old leathery Aussie while doing field work in Northern OZ. If your stuck in the soft sand and before you dig the wheels down to the diffs. Take the spark plugs out of the engine, put the transmission into Low Low. Start cranking the hand crank, a lot, and you will ever so slowly walk out of the sand. Works like a charm, and is a source of great aerobic exercise.

I feel like I am one of 10 in the US with my 110 Spec'd with a manual adjustment. I order it specifically for the reason above.

What's a manual adjustment?

Sounds like what's needed in the under-crackers after a sweaty run on a humid day.

Maybe I missed something, but all Defenders come with power steering, unless it's Flintstones spec. Maybe you're referring to power steering adjustment? To adjust the wheel up/down, etc.

We're not referring to the electric steering wheel position adjustment. We're talking about the electric power steering that moves the front wheels left and right and causes the vehicle to change direction when in motion.
