Integrated air compressor install w/ auxiliary climate
#12
Land Rover Air Compressor arrived just four days after shipping from the UK. Great buying experience from LR Direct and a very good price.
Install is done and took about 2-3 hours. I followed Powerful UK's video to a tee, so didn't see any need to photo-document my installation. Everything went smoothly. There is no need to remove the large box/cover over the rear air unit, its just attached to the entire plastic side cargo plastic. Having the rear air makes removing the amplifier bracket nearly impossible. Can't get to the mounting bolts on the right side, because they're blocked by the air unit. But the only reason to have to even remove the amplifier is to simply fish the new compressor wiring harness behind it. So by removing the left sided bolts, you can pull the amplifier out enough to fish the wire behind it without having to remove it entirely. It runs quiet and powerful and really doesn't take up as much space as I thought it might.
Here's a few pics of before, loosening the rear cargo panels and after. Let me know if anyone needs any help or questions!

Everything has been working perfectly since the install, but today, started blowing fuses... I installed a compressor myself as you can see above (to save money of course), but did it carefully and methodically (as per PowerFul UK's videos and the more crytic Land Rover instructions). It turns on but may inflate a tire, or may blow the fuse half way through. Fuses only blow when under load. Interestingly, if I have the compressor hose attached to a tire before turning on the compressor (so under air pressure load) the fuse blows quickly after turning on compressor. But most of the time, with the compressor on first, I can move to at least a tire or two and get them inflated before it blows again.
There are some very technical replies to a thread on this exact issue, that have been good to read... but no easy solution. The OP on that thread ended up getting a new compressor installed by his dealer and says its working perfectly. Makes you wonder if it was truly a faulty compressor or a faulty installation Then after the the dealer replaced the compressor, may have done a better job with the wiring, which can be a bit finicky.
Since I purchased and did the install myself (for a great price from LR Direct in the UK, I might say), I'm sure I have no warranty coverage (unless Land Rover were to honor a warranty on the part itself... but what a nightmare I'm sure that would be since I'm not the dealership). That's what I get for trying to cheap out. I've reached out to them to see if the claimed "One Year Warranty" will actually work for me...
Well, I may just have to go back through the installation and make sure all my connections are solid and clean...

@drcoop - That really does suck! My heart goes out to you. I think your best bet is to try to get a warranty claim on the part. The short/problem could be most anywhere. I would start by pulling out the compressor, attaching it to a 12v power source (external battery) with an inline fuse and see if it blows it again. If it does, it's the compressor and I wish you luck on getting a warranty claim. If not, then you have a short in one of your wiring connections.
