JLR Research Survey on autonomous/assisted driving tech
Just had this pop up in my inbox. Currently taking an autonomous driving survey sent by JLR. They asked me what my opinions were on various videos depicting autonomous driving system displays.
(I think the videos are hosted on a researcher's personal channel)
First one:
I was asked a series of questions regarding which system I preferred, and how I "felt" about certain systems. All of them sucked IMO. None of these are required for self driving/ADAS technology to work - and they do nothing but distract drivers' attention from the road. I never understood why it was necessary for *cough* certain car makers to display this video-game like simulation of what is right in front of you.
Figured y'all might be interested in seeing the videos.
I don't care for any ADAS systems other than adaptive cruise, which I find to be quite nice in stop-and-go traffic. Tesla Autopilot is completely misleading, and just look how many people died from using it. All of these systems are basically promoting distracted driving whether you realize it or not....
Our new X1 has the BMW Drive Assist Pro and below 40 mph in traffic it can "drive itself." I used it last week and admittedly, it worked, but I had my hands on the wheel pretty much at all times even though I could let the wheel go. I just didn't fully trust it. I did test to see if it was paying attention, and when I grabbed my phone, the car started beeping and chiming at me knowing I was on my phone.. GM's Super Cruise is the by far the best one I've experienced, but I just prefer to drive my car. After all, that's what cars are for, aren't they?
