Default Kudos to this guy! No spotter to the trails?

Maybe just a YouTuber but better than TFL with made up hype and disaster. The defender is a trouper. No it's not me.

Definitely not just a You Tuber. He does some of the best Series Land Rover restoration work available right now. $100k+ for one of theirs which is a bit nuts for a Series but they're doing God's work with better-than-new attention to detail.

That's what overlanding is supposed to be. What a great documentary of America's Southwest, those 44 minutes flew by. and made me want to go out there.

Thank you so much for finding this. This guy is my analog — he began exploring the American SW in 2001; I started Feb 2001. Has overlanded all over North America, including Lapland (I don’t even know where that is.) Got tired of driving from Connecticut to the good stuff in beat up 80s Land Rovers and Jeeps and ordered a 2022 LR 110… in March. Just like me, only I’m tired of driving from Atlanta. Sold my 2014 Wrangler to a friend in June, right before my 2022 110 arrived… that I ordered in March.

I love Elephant Hill and Beef Basin passionately and he did a great job of capturing a small bit of the mystery and majesty of the area. It’s great to see that a 110 fits through the squeezes of Elephant Hill. Don’t know if I would have tried it with mine; it’s close with a JK-era Wrangler. But now that I know the dang thing fits I’ll enjoy doing EH when I drive out there next. I’ve only watched the first adventure but will enjoy settling in for the rest of it later today. Thanks again!

Imagine getting stuck with no back up vehicle or "tires."

Totally agree! I subscribed to this guy a few weeks ago. Very well produced videos. I watched a couple of TFL videos before I realized they are just click n bate BS that have no relevance in recreational off-roading.

I always imagine that before I leave. 95% of my southwestern off-roading is just my vehicle, and probably 70% of it is just me in that vehicle. I never drive farther from a roadhead than I am prepared to walk back to. I have a full camping backpack in the Jeep (and will in the 110), and boots so I can do that. I have at least a 5-gallon water can and small containers to decant it to so I can carry what I need in the backpack.

Since I intersperse 50-70-mile backpacking trips with my Jeeping trips, and there’s hardly anywhere you can go in a 4x4 in the CONUS that’s farther than that from a paved road, a broken Landie would just mean (at worst) an unplanned backpacking trip and a ride back out to the truck to either fix it or tow it.

That said, I’d MUCH rather drive out than walk out, every time. But going solo is a fantastic adder to the trip and to your skill set. Not every time of course, but having that ability and using it regularly is a great thing. Solitude is vastly under-appreciated.

Not sure if he carried a extra container of gasoline and can you fill it up normally like old times or is there a valve in it like the no cap fill. I'm sure the range of the D2 was not 400 miles? I carry tire plugs just in case in my Escalade when we travel cross country.

Great stuff! This is what an earnest sophisticated storytelling is. No hypes, no sensationalization, no sarcasm, no tackiness. Just fun and inspirational.

lapland is in Finland at the North Pole…Santa’s, sledge, reindeers, husky and such…winter wonderland!

I still haven’t watched the rest of it, but for the Elephant Hill/Beef Basin part he’d probably have been fine. I once did a round trip from an hour out of Moab (staying at Base Camp, which is close to Chicken Corners for those who know the area). We left at 8am, rode into Moab, stocked up on food and fuel (I had two 5-gallon Jerry cans on the fenders of my Jeep), then drove the 70 miles to Elephant Hill, did that and Beef Basin (it’s about 50 miles, iirc), then took Lockhart Basin trail (38 miles) back to Chicken Corners. Got in at midnight. Longest day I’ve ever done on the trail 225 miles, all but 70 of it off-road. I never wanted to see another rock or 4x4 after that. Not till the next afternoon, anyway. :-)

We needed the fuel from the first 5-gallon can, but not the second.

On Beef Basin:
