Default Low Tire Life

Hi folks, This is a weird issue I'm having with my 2020 Defender 110 First Edition, which I bought brand new is Sept of 2020. Love the vehicle (my previous car was a 2010 Land Rover LR4, which we kept for 10-years and also loved). The tires that came with the vehicle lasted 30K miles. Since then, I've experienced unbelievably low tire life. With only 48K miles on the car as I type this message, the 4th set of tires are almost out of any tread. I've attached an image to illustrate the tire history of this vehicle. This is our family car, which we don't use for any towing or other industrial hauling purposes. Any idea what could be going on here? Thank you. Tom

Wow, only ~5k miles for 3 consecutive sets of tires. Something is definitely going on, but I'm going to guess it has something to do with the particular road surface you happen to be driving on, given the same results are happening with different brands of tires. Gravel roads? Unusually rough concrete roads? Formula One driver in training?

Is it the tire dealers telling you the tread is low? Because I have heard those people may not be 100% trustworthy.

If not, how is the tread wearing? Is it even? Uneven? Cupping? How are your tire pressures? It's hard to believe that properly inflated, decent quality tires are wearing out after 5-6000 miles without catastrophic problems with alignment or other suspension components.

Don't the Michelins come with tread wear warranty? If not, make sure the next set you buy does come with that.

Have you had an alignment done every time you had the tires replaced? Based on what you've said, it sounds like your suspension is way out of alignment.

We live in Greenwich, Connecticut, and the car in general is only on paved roads. It's got to be the car, since we're seeing the issue on different brands.

Actually, the Land Rover dealers and the tire dealers all agree that the tread is low - and it looks almost bald. Very even wear on the tires. Mavis Tire in Riverside, CT, told me that they see this issue a lot - and that the Defender is bad with all weather, highway tires - and needs more of a truck (he used the word "Jeep" tire) with deeper tread due to the weight. I don't know how much credibility to put into the Mavis Tire guy.

Have you checked if the wear on the tires is even on all four tires? I would have the dealer inspect the alignment of all four wheels. Also, always make sure the tires have the proper psi on them. You will experience undue wear on the tires if the alignment is off or the tires are under or over inflated. I would also inspect all the suspension components.

For comparison, our 110 HSE Dynamic with 22" is at 25k miles and the factory tires are getting low. My other heavy vehicle, 2020 Ram 1500, came with Highway Luxury all season tires and only lasted 35k miles. I replaced them with a Toyo Open Country and the tire life was much better, at 100k miles on truck now.

Our '22 110 SE has 32k on it and just had its oil changed at 30k where they said that 3 tires had 6mm on the tread and one had 8mm. The spare has a plug in it so obviously it was swapped at some point.

Odd, I'm at 41,000 plus on the original 18' Michelin tires and the rears are showing the most wear. I didn't rotate but did get two flats over the past couple years of ownership and 40k plus of driving.
